Use campaign email template for automation emails. [Shopify Apps

Topic summary

Users are trying to reuse campaign email templates within Shopify’s automation flows but cannot find the option in the standard automation setup.

The Solution:

  • Campaign templates must first be saved explicitly as templates (via the three-dot menu → “Save as template”)
  • These saved templates then appear under “Your templates” when creating automation emails
  • For pre-defined automation flows, users need to create a custom automation instead, or delete existing email actions and add new “Send marketing email” actions where custom templates can be selected

Key Steps:

  1. Design your campaign email
  2. Save it as a template using the menu option
  3. In automations, create a “Send marketing email” action
  4. Select your saved template from “Your templates” section

One respondent initially suggested this feature doesn’t exist and recommended a third-party app (Retentionly), but subsequent replies confirmed the functionality is available natively in Shopify Email—it just requires the extra step of explicitly saving campaigns as templates first.

Hi all,

I was looking to create a new subscriber automation email with the Shopify Emails app and it’s fairly easy to set it all up. However, when it comes to the design, I already have campaign email template I’d like to use for the automation design but I can’t for the life of me see how to load the campaign template design for the automation email. Is this a feature that just doesn’t exist, or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Looking for an answer on the exact same question! Any news?

If you have already created the template, you should find it here…

Yes, and that works for creating an e-mail campaign, but not for automation campaigns (from what I can find?). When trying to create an automation flow I can only select from Shopify’s other templates, not my own created email templates..

Gotcha, ok you need to create your own custom automation rather than their predefined ones.

Go to admin.shopify.com/store/[your-store]/apps/shopify-email/landing

Click Create Automation

Then click this…

In here you create your own Flow/trigger (customer created) and action (send Shopify Email).
In the action you can choose your created templates.

Hi @tegafuego ,

thanks for the great question, you’re definitely not missing anything obvious.

At the moment, the Shopify Email app does not support reusing campaign templates directly inside automation. While you can easily duplicate designs within the “Campaigns” section, that functionality unfortunately doesn’t extend to automation emails yet. It’s a limitation many merchants have run into when trying to maintain consistent branding across both types.

If you’re looking for a smoother experience, you might consider using an app like Retentionly – AI Email Marketing. It’s built for Shopify and makes email marketing easier with:

  • AI support and a simple setup that’s great for beginners
  • A pay-as-you-go model where you only pay for emails you send, not for your entire list
  • Free setup of your automated flows if you’d like help getting started

You can reach out via our live chat if you need help setting up or have any other queries.

Cheers,

You can use a campaign template within an automation, you just need to ensure that you save it as a template first, and then it will show under Your templates, as mentioned above.

Once you’ve finished creating your email:

  • Click the three dot menu on the top right, and select Save as template
  • Give it a name, then click Save.

Now, when you’re in the marketing automation, create a new Send marketing email action (if you wish to replace an email in one of the pre-defined marketing automation templates, you will need to delete the existing one, and create a new one), then click Select template. Click on Your templates, as mentioned in the reply above, and you should see the campaign template you saved.
