When I add a nested menu it just turns bold. It doesn’t show the collections etc.

Just add menus like this in your selected menu list(by default main menu is selected). I did this and the sub menu appears perfectly. The sub menu will show effect after few minutes, just remove the browser cache and check your store menu again.
