I think this depends from state to state. To be a legitimate incorporated business entity, at least in my state, you need some kind of business address. Many businesses use PO Boxes if they want to not use their home or office address for business activities. You also have to consider zoning laws and stuff like that.
As far as I know, you cannot incorporate as a legitimate business if you don’t provide an address.
Technically at any time you can create a sole proprietorship by just conducting business, but at that point you are personally liable for any damages you’re sued for-- including your personal assets like your house and car. If you incorporate with something like an LLC, the risk is lessened a lot less.
You might be able to find some kind of other option but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Depending on your state, getting a registered agent is also a good idea. They would be responsible for handling legal documents and stuff like that, then notifying you-- paperwork is sent to their address, not yours. But as far as I know you can’t incorporate a business using a registered agent’s address. Getting one would happen after you have already legally formed your business.
Not to be a downer, but dropshippers kind of have a bad name online for being shady. If you want to be successful, especially as a dropshipper, it’s a good idea to do things as professionally and by-the-book as possible.
NOTE: This is definitely not legal advice and only me brainstorming what I might do in this case. I am based in the United States. I suggest contacting a business lawyer for real, solid advice.
Hey, @Aradmonty
For general purposes I would recommend using an address that you as a business owner can be reached at in case of a customer looking to get in touch, handle a potential return, etc.
It is a better business practice to do so and makes your business more trustworthy for a customer to feel comfortable ordering from.
If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.
I read on another site that you can’t use a PO BOX for a Shopify business address, is this correct? I can’t find ANY information in the help page about this, and it is keeping me from finishing my site and starting sales. Any help? The goods I am selling are not digital, they are physical, and I am not using my home address for privacy reasons. I am also not incorporated. Thanks or the help!
