What defines product updates in admin > products (initial sorting)

I think we all have gotten used to the fact that Shopify Admin automatically shows us the Products page sorted by items that are most recently updated, whether it may be from someone buying the product (changing stock) or directly editing it in the admin.

My question is, what defines these updates? A store I’m managing, keeps seeing things sorted to the top which should not have been edited / purchased recently. Any way to easily get to the bottom of this or is it hidden?

Shopify sorts products by the most recent update, which includes any changes like stock adjustments, edits to product details, or even app-driven updates. Sometimes automated processes or apps might update products in the background, causing them to appear at the top unexpectedly. To investigate, check your activity logs or audit apps that might be modifying products automatically, as Shopify doesn’t provide detailed update reasons directly in the admin.
