Hi Daniel, I just received notification that my Shopify account was accessed by a browser in Toronto (see attached screenshots), it changed my payout bank account, but I was able to catch it within minutes, and change my password and also change my bank account back to mine (Digital Commerce Bank is not my bank account). Is there anything else I should be doing? I have a current balance in there and fear that it may be sent to the hacker bank account even though I have changed it back.
Thanks for the added information, Nicole.
I definitely recommend adding more precautions on your end such as two-factor authentication.
Two-step authentication provides extra security in case anyone other than you attempts to log in to your Shopify admin using your account. When you attempt to log in, you need to complete two separate steps:
- Enter your account credentials, which are your email address and your password.
- Authenticate your attempt to log in using a mobile device or a security key.
Two-step authentication makes it much more difficult for an unauthorized person to access your account. Even if someone else learns your password, they wonāt be able to log in without the second step.
I also recommend reaching out to our live support team to inform them of this incident to see if they can dig deeper into your account for any other changes that may have occured.
My company had similar experience with Shopify in 2019 where we lost thousands of dollars. Our Shopify account was hacked and our bank account info was changed. They used stolen credit cards to purchase items at a volume far above our normal average order price - $750 per order instead of $45 per order. We didnāt receive a notification from Shopify but rather my staff noticed the irregularity. When I called Shopify, they told me to change the bank account number which actually hurt me because when the credit cards did the chargeback it took it from my account not the fraudulent account. When I called the bank of the fraudulent account I was told Shopify had to contact them. Shopify would not help. I tried to appeal this with Visa and Mastercard but I had to go through Shopify. Again, Shopify would not help. I finally changed the cc processing company from ShopPay to Authorize.net. My store is now at a disadvantage because we donāt have access to all the perks of using ShopPay but to this day they will not help with this matter. Since 2019, security of the Shopify stores has not improved and their willingness to protect and help their customers has not changed either. If anyone has advice on how to handle this situation, Iād appreciate it.
Reaching out to your live support??? But your live support sucks? I have reached out to you the last 4 days and I havent got a decent reply yet? I ham having the same issue as this guy has.
Me and my team are just so lucky that we havent lost that much money as this guy. I really feel sad for him.
Weāre never gonna get our money back either and you just dont care⦠you just keep replying that we have to go to your useless livesupport..
Ended up losing about $13k and this was my first year in business. Shopify is a joke. All the fees and everything we pay and they can give 2 shi#s about thier customers. I will tell you chalk it up as a loss and move on. That is what shopify is going to tell you after jumping through all their hoops.
Hi! Can I ask how you managed to change the bank account back without knowing the hackers account number? We are new to Shopify, this has happened to us and support havenāt given us any clear instructions yet, just keep on saying that itās been passed on to another team. Is there someway to close down the shop and reset it that we havenāt figured out yet? Thanks! Glad you caught it quick!
Hi,
It was very easy for me to just go back in and change it back to mine. I didnāt need a password or the hackerās bank account. I caught it quickly because I got a notification that my account number was changed and when I went in to check it had in fact been changed.
So I changed all of my passwords for everything and switched it back to my own information.
I only ended up losing the payout of one small sale, and Shopify said that they wouldnāt help me or refund it back. They were very difficult to deal with.
Sorry this is happening, if I can help let me know.
Nicole
Oh thanks Nicole, yeah I canāt seem to find where to change the bank
account back without having to know the hacker bank account number!!
I got onto it quick too, thankfully read the email not long after it
happened, luckily we havenāt sold anything and Iāve turned off shop pay so
no harm done really, itās just frustrating how useless Shopify is as they
canāt tell me how long itās going to take. Iāve read quite a few incidents
like this and it makes me wonder about how secure Shopify is and Iām
starting to think of looking down a different avenue for our online shop!
Thanks for your reply!! ![]()

Hi, the same thing happened to me over the holiday weekend and I am now dealing with $70,000 worth of chargebacks that I most likely will lose. On top of that, because there are so many chargebacks, Shopify is now placing a hold on all my payouts!! I havenāt gotten paid for a monthās worth of sales from our site due to our site being hacked and Shopify is not helping at all. Could I ask if you were ever able to get any help? From either Shopify or from your bank regarding the chargebacks? I am at a complete loss and am having panick attacks as it is a large sum of money that we are being responsible for when we are actually victims of fraud ourselves.
I have not
hi, were you ever able to get any of your 30,000 back? the same thing happened to our business recently and am needing some advice and direction on how to navigate. thank you.
Kiss it goodbye! Shopify will be ZERO help and neither will the bank because it is not a transaction. I did a police report, I had their bank info, I had their IP address and every source said to piss off. I hope you recover but I didnāt lose as much as you. In the end I lost about $15K
We never received support of satisfaction from Shopify. They said the changing of accounts by the fraudster was our fault. Their response time was terrible.
You should consult your tax advisor because though not comforting during this time, our losses were able to be taken as a one time deduction.
Best wishes in your recovery.
We received no support from Shopify about this but learned that such a loss can be and was a tax loss write off.
Itās October 2025, and itās deeply concerning that small business owners are still facing Shopify account breaches and payout diversions ā the very same problems discussed in this thread years ago.
Our own company, #TwistedsageStudios (twistedsage.com), experienced a payout account hijacking earlier this month. Despite following all procedures and having multiple support tickets escalated to the āRisk & Security Team,ā weāve received no timeline, no update, and no direct communication for nearly two weeks.
For a platform built on trust and entrepreneurial support, this lack of transparency and urgency is unacceptable. When a verified merchant loses access to their funds, there should be a dedicated, real-time security response team ā not automated replies and open-ended silence.
Shopify has grown into a global e-commerce powerhouse, but small businesses like ours are still the foundation of that success. Itās time for Shopify to strengthen its accountability, improve communication, and restore confidence for the thousands of creators and merchants who depend on it.
