When is the best time to start with Google Ads and Shopping?

We plan to go live with our shop very soon, and I was wondering if we should consider starting right from the start, or wait until we start getting some sales and traffic for Google Ads to gather data from and expand on.

Hello Stsk9, thank you for your question and welcome to the Shopify AMA, I’m your host, Emmanuel from FeedArmy.

Before you start with Google Shopping, I recommend to double check your website is compliant, it’s extremely easy to get suspended. Once you done that you are safe to set everything up.

From Google Ads perspective, it doesn’t really matter if you have sales or not at the moment, as there is no influence directly from this angle, other then retargeting / remarketing side of things.

But I would personally just start from the get go with a small daily budget and a not too high ROAS target using performance max. Test this for 3 weeks and see how it goes.

You can let me know how it goes in 3 weeks and I can give you more pointers.

Hi Stak9,

As Emmanuel said, once GMC is fully setup you should start right away with testing Google Ads. Start with a small budget and see the results.

A general tip I always give for Shopify website owners who just start out with Google Ads:

  1. If you sell Brand Name Brands and you have competitive pricing you can be very successful with Google Ads if the AOV is above $50 - If its below $50 it will be hard to be profitable unless your conversion rate will be above 6%

  2. If you sell private label Brands, it might be very difficult to be profitable with Google Ads at the beginning until you build up a customer base. If you have a niche website with a good collection in the same niche, it might be a bit easier.

Wishing you Good Luck!
