Why am I being charged 5000 for a 20 Rupees per month plan?

Topic summary

Users are confused about being asked to authorize ₹5,000 when selecting Shopify’s promotional ₹20/month plan for the first three months.

The Issue:

  • When choosing the monthly billing option, the system requests authorization for ₹5,000 INR
  • Users expected to pay only ₹20 for their first month
  • Screenshots show the ₹5,000 authorization request during UPI payment setup

Shopify’s Explanation:

  • The ₹5,000 is a one-time authorization mandate for UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment method
  • Users are only charged their actual invoice amount (₹20/month initially)
  • This authorization allows Shopify to automatically deduct future payments up to ₹5,000
  • If any invoice exceeds ₹5,000, manual approval is required

User Concerns:

  • Some users remain skeptical about authorizing ₹5,000 when only testing the ₹20 trial plan
  • The distinction between “authorization” and “actual charge” causes ongoing confusion
  • Users want to try the low-cost plan first before committing to higher authorization limits

Status: The technical explanation has been provided, but user concerns about the authorization amount remain unresolved.

when i choose 20 rupees per month plan it shows 5000 to pay why is that?

Hello, @ra12 .

Welcome to the Shopify Community.

Are you able to advise what plan you’ve selected and share a screenshot as well?

When selecting either the Basic, Shopify, Advanced or Starter plan, you’ll get your first 3 months for ₹20/mo.

When selecting a plan, the Starting at price will display the per-month rates for the annual plan by default. You can keep your current monthly rates by selecting the annual plan. On the following page, you can select your billing cycle either Monthly or Annual and click Confirm billing cycle.

Please let me know if this has helped!

I am choosing monthly plan which means that i have to pay 20 rupees for the first month right?
But its asking me to pay 5000 rupees..

Thanks for your reply, @ra12 .

For better visibility, are you able to share a screenshot, please?

Thanks!

Ya Sure!

This is my plan.

And here its showing 5000 which includes all the future bills but i would like to pay monthly..

Thanks for advising, @ra12 .

In regard to your screenshot, if you have a UPI ID, payment app, and PIN, then you can add UPI as your primary payment method for Shopify bills. Based on what’s shared in the screenshot, this means that when using your UPI payment app for transactions with Shopify, you may be asked to provide a one-time authorization for a payment of 5000 INR (Indian Rupees). By granting this mandate, you are giving permission to Shopify to automatically deduct payments for future bills that are below or equal to the specified mandate amount. This allows for convenient and automated payment processing for future transactions on Shopify. You can find more information on this here: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment method.

Thank you for your help..

That means, Shopify will charge me rs.5000/ immediately or it’s only a permission for the future transactions.

Hi! The amount you’re being asked to authorize is a maximum charge. You should still only be charged the amount on your invoice.

hi Victoria
so it is asking permission for future deduction or it will cut 5000 rupees automatically at once in monthly plan?

Hi, @sorgin . The amount you pay at once would depend on your invoice. When you first sign up for UPI, you will be asked to authorize a maximum charge amount of 5,000 INR. By authorizing this, you are giving permission for Shopify to automatically deduct payments for future bills that are below or equal to the specified amount. However, you will only actually be charged the amount on your invoice. If the invoice is larger than 5,000 INR, you will be required to login to your Shopify admin to approve the bill payment through UPI.

But first I will try the 20 rupees plan for one month than I’ll decide which plan I really need so why will I give 5000 for granting transaction permission why will I not just try 20 rupees plan for 1 month first this is not right you should understand what we would be able to do .
