Why am I charged transaction fees on one of my two stores?

I have 2 Shopify stores, one was started in 2017 and one was started in 2023. Same country, same Basic shopify plan, same third party payment provider.

On the shop that I started in 2017 Shopify has never charged any transaction fees in the 6 years that the shop has been running, not a single cent. On the new shop I am charged 2% per transaction, which obviously came as a huge shock to me.

Can anyone explain this?

I guess pricing on those store note that same. You can check pricing page from here for more detail

I’m familiar with the pricing, it doesn’t answer my question though.

Hi there @ccronje !

While we’re not able to access or discuss account info here in the Community I can share some info on what may be happening here.

Transaction fees are normally payable for any Shopify store using a third-party, non-Shopify Payments credit card gateway.

It can sometimes be the case that some older stores were set up on custom pricing plans that waived transaction fees even in these cases.

If you find that your new store is eligible for transaction fees whereas the much older store is not, it is likely the case that your older store is on a custom plan.

I’d advise against moving your older store onto another plan unless you are certain you need to, as it would not be possible to move back onto a custom plan that is no longer being offered by Shopify.

If you want to confirm the terms of the specific plans being used on each of your stores you can reach out via our Help Centre here, where we can access and discuss your account securely.

All the best!
