Why am I getting a 500 error when purchasing a theme?

I’ve been trying to purchase a theme from the Shopify theme store for a little while now. Originally, I simply got a “payment failed” notification (strange, but likely on my bank’s end). However, I’ve tried it on my phone and again on my computer, and now I get a 500 (server) error. Is this a known issue or is there something unusual about just my attempt?

I attempted to get a screenshot but the error only lasts a few seconds before disappearing.

I have come across this issue before and found that local browser configurations are a common contributor. I’d be curious to know if we can isolate what you’re experiencing to your device or browser. Would you mind testing a few things for me?

  • Try an Incognito window - login to Shopify and see if you’re able to purchase the theme. If it works, it means your browser likely needs its cache cleared.

  • I suggest clearing your browser cache and make sure you are operating on the latest version of Google Chrome. When you use a browser, like Chrome, it saves some information from websites in its cache and cookies. Clearing them fixes certain problems, like loading or formatting issues on sites.

  • Try another browser (e.g. Safari, Microsoft Edge, Firefox).

  • Try completing the same steps on your phone, using data rather than WiFi.

If you find these troubleshooting suggestions make no difference, it looks like we’ll need to do some further digging into what the root cause of this issue may be.

Thanks, I contacted support. I’ve tried using Incognito, two other browsers, my phone and clearing my cache with no success. It should be resolved shortly, I’ll share updates here when I get them.
