Why are my order numbers showing strange behavior on POS?

Hi,

my stores order numbers, as everyone elses, are counting upwards from #1001.

Suddenly, with two orders I put into the system via Shopify POS, I have two order numbers that look like this:

#2-1026 and #2-1023

Please notice, that these were made in 7 minutes of each other and no other sales were in between, neither in POS nor online.
How can this happen? Which reason is there, that the appending “2-” appears for an order number that has long been used! I have left order number #1023 and #1026 far behind already!

For legal reasons (taxes) all order numbers have to be in a logic order.

EDIT: And no, i did not set an additon to my order numbers in the settings.

Is it maybe because i marked (in shopify POS) the orders as partially unpaid and not delivered?

Point of Sale order prefixes will appear if the order is marked unpaid or partially paid, which explains why you see the device ID added to the orders. The order number itself (i.e. 1026 & 1023) does not follow the same logic as your other order numbers when this happens. If an order is marked unpaid, partially paid, or if there is a momentary network glitch, then the order number that appears after the device ID will mirror the receipt number.

For example, if you open up a POS order that appears normal (any order without the prefix), you’ll notice that under the order number, there is a receipt number (i.e. #1 - 1000) as each receipt is given its own value, just like your orders. When there one of the actions mentioned above occurs, the system will match the receipt number instead of starting from the last order number within your admin.

Regretfully, there would not be a way to change how the order number appears once they’ve been added to your admin. However, I do hope this provides some insight into why your orders are appearing out of sorts. If you have any questions, please let me know!

In the latest update (July 2022), we have suddenly seen the same thing happen to our cash orders only, and only periodically/sporadically. These are cash POS sales that are marked as paid in full (they are not partially paid or unpaid). We can only assume this is a glitch in the system, and unfortunately for our accounting purposes these order #s are NOT showing up in our financial reports… BIG issue. Please advise.

Sorry to hear you’re having issues with the POS system after the most recent update. Your best option would be to contact Shopify Support as they can help troubleshoot this further.
