Why are shipping labels double printing?

Topic summary

A user experiences persistent print dialog boxes when printing shipping labels on 8.5x11 paper, creating risk of accidental duplicate prints and wasted label stock.

Issue Details:

  • Print dialog remains visible after printing instead of automatically closing
  • Occurs across multiple browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox)
  • Safari specifically leaves “Cancel or Print” buttons active on screen
  • Printer location makes it difficult to verify if labels actually printed

Suggested Solutions:

  • Adjust Mac system settings: disable “Show Print Dialogue” in Printers & Scanners
  • Download labels before printing (user noted this isn’t viable for their workflow)
  • Install print management tools
  • Verify using Shopify’s recommended label format

Current Status:
The issue persists across browsers despite initial troubleshooting. The user seeks a solution that allows the print dialog to auto-close like other shipping programs, enabling faster workflow without manual verification.

Every time I print a shipping label (on 8.5x11, Safari browser), the print dialog box comes up again, and if I’m not careful, I hit Print again which is annoying and wasting label stock. Is there a fix?

Update: Tested with Chrome and same thing: print dialog box remains on the screen, rather than disappearing like in every other program.

Hi @SteveB3

Here are a few steps to resolve or work around the issue:

Use Google Chrome or Firefox
Download the Label First before printing

Check Safari Print Settings
Use Shopify’s Recommended Format

Thank you. When working fast, it leaves me wondering whether I printed the last one or not (printer isn’t always next to me).

Tried Chrome and Firefox and same thing, print dialog box remains on the screen. At least they don’t have the Cancel or Print option left on the screen like Safari does. But still, I wish the dialog box would disappear like it does in every other shipping program.

Downloading the label first isn’t a viable option.

As far as I know, I only use Shopify’s format when printing from Shopify.

Hi @SteveB3 , Thank you for the reply. Try following the steps to resolve:-

  1. Change Printer Defaults in Mac Settings

Go to system settings and select Printers and Scanners as to default.
Uncheck Show Print Dialogue

  1. Install a Print Management Tool

Let me know if this works for you.
