Why are South Africans being charged transaction fees without access to Shopify Payments?

Hi

Shopify Payments is not in South Africa. Is there any intention for Shopify Payments to be available for South Africa and if yes is there an estimated time frame?

Why are South Africans being charged Shopify transaction fees when we don’t have Shopify Payments in South Africa?

Previously I was not charged, now I am being charged these fees, this not fair, why is Shopify doing this?

Hi @Kolz ,

Transaction fees are charged to all merchants not using Shopify Payments, regardless of whether or not they are based in a country where Shopify Payments is available. These fees help Shopify pay for the cost and maintenance of our integrations with third-party payment providers. This has been the case for many years and transaction fees are not a new charge for merchants using Shopify.

In terms of making Shopify Payments available in South Africa, while this is not something that is due to happen imminently, we are consistently expanding the eligibility for the gateway to merchants in new countries. For example, the gateway was made available to merchants in Portugal, Switzerland, Czechia, Finland, and France in 2022 alone.

Our development team track merchant feedback and this plays a big part in where we may expand the gateway to next. I will be sure to pass your request onto our team for their consideration.

Couldn’t agree with you more! The 5% (on there starter plan) plus the additional minimum of 2% on my 3rd-party payment gateway (which is one of the cheapest) would just make it unaffordable to choose Shopify especially seeing as they’re not planning on offering Shopify Payments in South Africa any time soon.
