Why does Shopify need a Social security ? Do I have to start paying taxes at the start of my shop?

I’m 17 years old and want to start a Shopify Store. But whose Social Security Number(SSN) show I put for payments, mine or my parents and how does that affect taxes (Since I don’t do that yet, but if I start making money I’ll have too right)?

Hi @naydalymunoz ,

Nick here from Shopify.

In this instance, it would need to be your parent’s SSN for the payments and they would also need to be the account owners (AO) as per the Shopify terms and conditions stating you must be 18 yrs old. Any income from the store (Shopify Payments (SP’s)) will be reported to the IRS under your parent’s SSN also.

You can read the Shopify Terms of Service here and see no.2 of the Account terms regarding what we are discussing below:

I hope that helps and answers your question. Let me know if you have any others. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers, Nick

I was in the exact same situaion, I have now turned 18, how do I change my ssn into my name?

Hi @calebpulver ,

This is something which you would need to reach out to our support team about who can assign it to the right team to look into. We’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit our support team here and log in to your account to create a support request. Once you are talking to a support advisor and verified your account they can assist you with this.

Thanks, Nick
