I am hoping I could get some help here with the inventory levels for some items that keep on changing on their own. These items did not have any restocking from returns/refund or new stock added. I do not do drop-shipping. For some items, the # of units the system listed is more than I had ever ordered. I have since manually corrected the ones I happened to catch. I have had to make correction twice for some items because the # of units went back up again after my first correction. It appears to happen to one particular product category, though I may not have caught every error. This is quite concerning as my business may run into the risk of overselling because the system keeps bumping up the # of units available for sale.
I saw a post from another user discussing about this same issue in 2021, but there wasn’t a solution or explanation that was helpful. Has anyone else experienced this as well? Is there a known glitch in Shopify inventory management system that hasn’t been addressed or fixed? I know I may get feedback on the need to purchase a separate inventory management system. It would be a shame because we already have to pay extra for a lot of add-on’s to run on Shopify.
I have this same problem! All the toys we definitely sold out of before Christmas are back in stock! With their original stock numbers. The girls told me the numbers were changing on their own but i didn’t believe them until i saw a whole toy range go back to being in stock! What is happening! I’ll have to get the staff to go through and stock take everything.
We experience this phenomenon often - at least once a month and we run small inventory levels, but a large range, and so are often caught short.
This has been ongoing for 2 years now and support are unable to assist.
Initially, I was dismissive of my partner not saving or making an error, but I’ve witnessed this first hand and checked and double checked after saving products, only to find we sell an item we had one left and then to our surprise, another (and there’s sometimes days or weeks in between).
It’s incredibly frustrating and unprofessional toward our customers.
If anyone else has experienced this and found a solution, I’m all ears.
Please reach out to our authenticated support team to further investigate this. Inventory number should not be changed without a user or an app making those changes. Our team would be happy to look into this with you.

Did you ever figure out why the inventory level was changing? I have a Flow set up to send me an email if inventory goes below 20 (it runs when inventory changes) - and was surprised when all of our PDF items were suddenly at 0. I set them back to 1000. Next day they returned to 0 and I was sent more alert emails from the Flow. Some other items were also set to 0 inventory. This is all happening on our store at 9:20pm for the last 5 days. What in the world?
I have noticed that when I am adding new items and duplicate a product, it doubled the inventory.
It doesn’t seem to do it anymore, but I am now dealing with the consequences with overselling items and refunding customers. It’s awful, I don’t look good, and Shopify’s response just blames the user.
i have a thrift shop and its destroying my web shop yes this is the here and there some staff grabbed it but its un deniable that we sold it and still have it in the system I’m very confused on what’s causing the prob even if there is a issue i would at least like a way i can correct it if shopify cant its been very sad seeing so many sales i have to turn down and then the distrust it must bring the potential customer
This is an on-going issue and here we are in 2025. What is the status of figuring this out an rectifying. I just spent a week running end of year inventory and it is immediately out of synch again. 40 products that we do not have are back in inventory. Why?
This only happens with items ordered from Faire. Is there someway to turn off Faire integration?
I’ve been with Shopify for 5 years and there’s nothing more frustrating than seeing others have the same problem with inventory changing itself and Shopify turning a blind eye. I ordered stock from a supplier to find that half the stock I actually have in stock is now 0 AGAIN after doing a stock check at the beginning of the month!!! If this can’t be sorted by Shopify I’m going to have to leave when my sub is up in a few months as its affecting my business online…
