I get that there are apps available to show local currencies in product pages and carts but it’s still not as effective as letting them actually checkout using the currency they want.
I still don’t understand why Shopify doesn’t provide a feature where website visitors can checkout using their local currency.
Will Shopify ever sort this out?

Hi @PrimeBeast7 ,
Thank you for reaching out. Shopify does now offer a multi-currency feature, which allows customers to check out and pay in their local currency. However, please bear in mind that this feature is only available to merchants using Shopify Payments at this time.
If you have any questions about this feature please let me know.
Kind regards,
Victor | Shopify Social Care
Thank you, I will look into this

Hi Victor,
Is there a solution for businesses that can’t use Shopify Payments? I am based in Greece.
I moved from the UK to Greece in April and this has caused major issues for my shop. Loads of abandoned carts from non Euro countries.
I would be grateful if you could help me solve this.
Many thanks,
Love

Hi @Love_Imbro ,
If you’re not in a country where Shopify Payments is available, then the best alternative option would be to use one of the many currency apps available on the Shopify App Store. These apps allow you to offer multiple currencies on your storefront that customers can use to browse your products and see their prices in their chosen currency, providing them with a clearer idea of what the cost of their potential purchase would be. They will still be paying for their order in whichever currency you have set on your store when they get to checkout.
Would you be able to tell more about where you sell to? Is it primarily in continental Europe/ the EU, or are you mainly targeting customers in the UK?
Hey @Victor_5 , thanks for getting back to me!
I used to be based in the UK but moved to Greece where Shopify Payments is not available unfortunately. I already have a currency app but instead I need customers to be able to checkout in their local currency (just like they would if I was still able to have Shopify Payments. I have lost so many of my US & UK customers because of that.
My customers are from all around the world. US, UK, France, Germany are my biggest markets.
Thank you,
Love
Hi @Love_Imbro ,
Okay, I see. I am afraid that the only way for a customer to pay for their order in their desired currency is if you are using Shopify Payments, as the multi-currency feature is only available through our own gateway at this time.
Aside from using the apps I mentioned that allow customers to view prices in their own currency up until the cart page, your next best option would likely be to have multiple stores aimed at your different audiences (e.g. seperate stores for the UK, EU, and US). You’d then want to try and find a gateway that allows you to accept payments in the appropriate currency (i.e. GBP for the UK store, EUR for the EU store, USD for the US store) so your customers can visit the local version of your site and pay in their local currency. You can check out our blog post that discusses using multiple, region-specific storefronts for more guidance and information on this.
I recognize that neither of these suggestions are ideal, but these are alternatives you can consider while you do not have access to Shopify Payments. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
I have the same problem @Victor_5 …
We want to sell locally and internationally, but not being in your Shopify Payment zone makes it hard for us to reach our market and frustrating for them to check out in their own currency. Why is Shopify not doing something about this yet, until now? I’ve seen hundreds of posts on the same issue but it turned “cold”/unresolved until now.
Creating multiple stores aimed at different locations in Shopify Market makes your store dead in search engines… what’s the point of us paying for Shopify monthly fee if we cannot scale our businesses just because of this payment issue? Payment is the end-game and should be the last great experience for your customer. And if it’s a pain checking out in your store - what good is your business then? Say hello to lots of abandoned cart!
Hi @JenaSunn ,
Thank you for reaching out for sharing your feedback, and I can appreciate the frustration in not having access to Shopify Payments and the various features that come with it. This is something we’ve heard from merchants in countries where Shopify Payments is not available and our development team asks for us to pass on feedback on this topic when we receive it.
I will be sure to pass your feedback onto them and we appreciate you communicating your suggestion to us here. I hope in future that multicurrency options at checkout is something we can offer to more merchants around the world.
