Forced inclusion of products in Shopify’s new Agentic Storefronts is the main issue. Sellers say, unlike other sales channels, this one appears enabled without prior opt-in and has no visible self-service opt-out, creating concerns about vendor contract compliance, ethics, copyright, and AI use of product images/descriptions.
Key points raised:
Shopify support reportedly suggested setting products to “Unlisted,” but multiple replies say this is not a workable fix because it also removes products from search engines, sitemaps, and normal storefront visibility.
Some suggested checking whether the channel can be unpublished per product or removed in the sales channel/app settings, but several posts indicate those controls are missing or unclear.
Technical workarounds like robots.txt or meta tags were discussed, but others warned these can harm SEO and do not stop Shopify from sharing catalog data through its own systems.
Most important update:
A later report says support can manually submit a removal request, and a follow-up confirms the channel was removed from that store. A screenshot was shared as supporting evidence.
Status: not fully resolved platform-wide. No general opt-out setting is confirmed yet, but manual removal through support may currently be possible.
For everyone other selling channel, I am able to Opt In before enabling selling.
For the new “Agentic Storefronts”, not only does it not wait for sellers to Opt In, it doesn’t allow us to Opt Out.
I do not want my products listed on any Generative AI platforms. I feel it is deeply unethical, and it also likely violates my contracts with several vendors.
Shopify Support is unable to give any answer, except to set all of my products as Unlisted— Which would also remove them from Search Engines, and even my own web store. That’s patently ridiculous.
I need a real solution for this. I do not want to have to replace my entire web store and point of sale for $400,000 in sales per year.
This is a legit concern, especially with vendor contracts in the mix. The fact that it’s opt-in for every other channel but forced for this one feels inconsistent.
My first thought would be to check if Agentic Storefronts shows up as a separate sales channel in the product editor under “Publishing.” For other channels you can toggle individual products on/off there without touching your main store visibility. If it shows up, you could deselect products from it one by one (or in bulk).
If it doesn’t appear as a toggleable channel in Publishing, that’s the real issue and worth pushing support to escalate. The “set everything as Unlisted” suggestion is obviously not a real solution for a $400K/yr store.
Have you tried going through Shopify Plus or Partner support channels instead of general support? They tend to have more flexibility with policy stuff like this.
@tim_tairli I understand your concern but this is temporary suggestion..if merchant got approval from vender and correct way from shopify support… ( then things will normal )
For annoying channel nonsense, first check if the channel can be straight up removed in the apps/channels admin.
Or at the product level be able to unpublich products from the quote unquote “channel” .
For real results contact a your local government representative or congressman.
The whole automatic opt-in by all these platforms thing is a form of consumer fraud that’s been allowed to fester.
And that festering has become malignant with the current behavior of AI profiteering to illegally misuse the fair use system made to serve humans in order to bypass humans to serve machines that are outside the fair use framework.
Meta
This it is multiplatform problem as really you have to go hat in hand asking pretty please to each ai provier to remove/block/prevent your content from THOSE systems. shopify cannot do this step for you it is the merchants responsibility to monitor the merchants IP copyrights, trademarks, patents, etc
It’s absurd, talk to a lawyer if there’s serious money involved.
Don’t expect a publicly traded company like shopify to do this work for you.
It is ridiculous but it is the state of things when your in someone elses sandbox whose drunk so much of the kool-aid they treat the sandbox as a toilet in a capitalistic system.
The current kludge is to set it so purchasers are sent to your website; isn’t that so nice of them to allow you do to that
And update your service terms.
Again consult a lawyer, as these companies are playing fast and loose with fair use(a system built for humans not machines) and it’s safe to assume many will straight up ignore robots.txt.
Currently you can’t get them while the courts let them hide behind fair-use abuse, but catching them bypassing site terms may be the longer play.
I completely understand your frustration. The lack of an opt-out mechanism for a new sales channel is a legitimate concern, especially when you have vendor contracts that may restrict where products can be listed.
A few things that might help with your immediate situation:
On the vendor contract issue this is worth raising directly with Shopify’s legal/compliance team, not just general support. The fact that Agentic Storefronts distributes your product data to third-party AI platforms without explicit seller consent could genuinely conflict with distribution agreements. I’d recommend filing a formal request through your Shopify Partner manager or escalating through the Shopify Community’s official feedback channels. The more merchants who flag this, the more likely Shopify addresses it.
On controlling what AI sees while a full opt-out doesn’t exist yet, you do have some control over how your data appears. Your robots.txt can block specific AI crawlers (GPTBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot, etc.) from scraping your storefront directly. This won’t fully prevent Agentic Storefronts from sharing your catalog data through Shopify’s own API, but it limits what AI tools can independently crawl from your site.
The “set all products as Unlisted” suggestion from support is not a real solution you’re right about that. It would break your SEO and your own storefront. That response suggests support doesn’t have proper tooling for this yet, which means the opt-out feature likely needs to be built.
I think Shopify will eventually add granular channel controls for this, similar to how you can enable/disable other sales channels per product. But right now the feature is too new and they’re prioritizing rollout over merchant controls. Pushing this through official feedback and getting other merchants to upvote the request is probably the fastest path to getting it built.
+1 on this. It is disgusting to push this onto customers with no ability to opt out, no settings, no choice.
As a creative business, I cannot in good faith allow my products, or products I purchase to consensually be listed on AI. It’s insulting that the only option, given by support is “In the meantime to prevent your products from appearing in ChatGPT, please set each product to Unlisted. I understand this isn’t the best solution, as it also removes them from search engines and sitemaps.” which translates to me as “if you don’t like it, leave”. It’s ridiculous to have the only option to remove Agentic storefronts as shutting down your store.
What concerns me even more is that all images, descriptions, etc. are being fed into AI models directly as part of this and likely being used to train ChatGPT and others to directly steal our marketing, our products, or art.
This is deeply disappointing and going to lose Shopify business from thousands of creatives.
As an artist who sells my custom artwork on my shopify website, I am appalled that we do not have an optout feature! AI is DESTROYING custom handmade art. We have NO copyright or intellectual property protection with AI. The fact that my items are all now available to search on these AI platforms has me absolutely FURIOUS. In deep diving and researching, I have learned that you can poison AI images with special filers that only AI can detect and not the naked eye. Check out glaze and nightshade if you are an artist like me who needs to protect your work! As for Shopify - you need to do better, much better. You have always cared about artists and supported us and now you are turning your backs on us by not allowing us to fully opt out of this AI crap. The suggestions to UNLIST items is not a fix or solution to this issue at ALL. It only does even more harm to us in breaking the ability for our items to be searched via google and even our own websites! Do better.
So, they will hopefully honor that. The agent tried multiple times to convince me that I should stay but they finally submitted the request with their “specialist” to remove it from my shop. Hopefully it goes through, it’s worth a try.
