I am not an American citizen, but I have an American company registered in Colorado. The main market for my Shopify store is the United States, and the transaction currency is based on US dollars. In this case, what qualifications do I need to activate Shopify payment?
To use Shopify Payments, you need to be a U.S. resident, have a U.S. bank account, and be able to provide valid U.S. government-issued identification, such as a Social Security number or Tax ID. However, if you’re a non-U.S. citizen with a registered U.S. company, you may be able to apply for Shopify Payments by providing proof of your company’s registration in the U.S. and a valid U.S. bank account.
I’d like to confirm some of the info you would need to be able to provide in order to apply to use Shopify Payments when based outside of the target country:
Business Registration documents for that region. The document must show your legally registered business name, Business TIN, and Business Address (For example: In the US this would be an SS-4 or CP-575 Letter).
Valid Photo ID for your account representative, and any other owners who are not native to the region. Passports are preferred.
You must be able to prove that you have physical business operations happening within the region. Examples of this include a storefront, employees working there, a warehouse you rent or own shipping their orders, etc.
I know that the proof of your business operations in that country is the most important requirement in order to apply for this, as you have to show you have an actual locus of business in that region in order to be permitted there.
This would be in addition to the usual Shopify Payments requirements in terms of bank accounts etc.
If you do have this info and can submit it, you can reach out for account support via our Help Centre here where we can forward your application to the appropriate team.
Hi Don, Just confirming some more info please.
I do have a US registered Business with an EIN and business bank account in the US. However Our products are being shipped via a 3rd party such as amazon or 3pl shipping company what information exactly is required in this instance?
We are now in the process of setting up so it sounds like a catch 22 situation where I need the website operational to get things setup with my shipper but I also need to get the shipping sorted before I can get shopify payments sorted out?
Can you please verify?
Is an EIN and Bank account not sufficient when signing up once its approved on the shopify website itself?
funny story.
Once you have the required info when signing up and you can provide your EIN passport etc it will be approved. If you have to communicate with a human they’re going to ask for proof of presence in the US.
Seems as if your account is flagged once they will give you hell to ever get out of it. I have communicated with a couple who were approved or denied based on how the initial setup went.
Good luck shopify is very unhelpful… I’m looking at alternatives right now.
Hi Ricardom, how did you get the SSN?when i active the shopify payment and provide US registered Business with an EIN and business bank account in the US.I found shopify also need the SSN.I’m non-U.S. citizen ,so i do not have this number.
I’ve recently encountered an issue with Shopify Payments. Since I’m not physically located in the USA, Shopify has informed me that I can’t use their payment services like Visa, MasterCard, or other payment methods that Shopify supports. Instead, I’ve been advised to use third-party payment providers.
However, I’m facing challenges because many popular third-party payment methods aren’t available in my region. I do have an EIN number and a business address in the USA, and while I’m not a US resident, I do have a SS-4 form instead of a SSN. Does this help in any way, or am I still restricted from using Shopify Payments?
Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation? What alternatives are available for those of us who can’t use third-party payment methods easily? I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to navigate this situation and ensure a smooth payment experience for my customers.
I’ve been waiting for Shopify payment to open for about 20 days. They reached me via e-mail.
They wanted details about the company. And all details were replied via email.
But I’m still waiting. There is no sale in the account yet. Our company address is our physical office where we have been managing our own business for 3 years.
Please can someone help? SS-4 document and Passport control do not take 20 days.
