I do mostly custom engraved items and am in the process of getting my store up and going. One issue I have is most of my products are customized for the person. For example, this water bottle can be engraved with a student’s name and the year the will graduate.
How do I add a way for the customer to fill this information in? Variants only let them choose from a list. I could put all relevant years in a list for them to pick from, but I can’t list all possible names. How can this be done without paying for another add on?

Which theme are you currently using?
Can you tell me more about the products you’re selling and the types of customzation options you need? For example, will all products have the same customization options or will your customization options differ depending on the product?
If you’d prefer not to use a third party app, one suggestion I have is to use the cart notes feature that is typically built into your theme. Using the Dawn theme as an example, you can find this setting by going into your theme editor and navigating to Theme settings > Cart. There, you’ll see the Enable cart note setting. The exact steps and name of this setting may differ depending on your theme. That being said, when this setting is enabled a text box is added to your cart page where customers can add more information to their order. By default the cart note text box will say something like “Order special instructions”, but you can customize this text using your Theme content editor. This guide explains how to use your theme content editor if you’d like more information. One thing to keep in mind with this is that the notes will be for a customer’s entire order, so if a customer needs to customize multiple products in one order, it would all need to be explained in the same text box.

Products will vary in what information I will need from the customer.
I will look though the 3rd party apps. The ones I have found so far that look like they will do what I need are too expensive of an option at least at this stage of my business.
