Analytics messed up By Shopify - Iowa Council Bluffs

Hi All,

It seems I am getting a LOT of traffic from Shopify (Iowa).

Its is ruining my analytics and to be honest, upsetting me a litte. I see customers on my page but they are not real. It then says my CTR is low etc. Shopify said to use GA4. Can’t believe they are telling me to use a different website to track traffic. What is the point. Anyone else getting this? Di you manage to filter it out?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

What you’re seeing is referrer spam / internal Shopify traffic showing up in your analytics. It’s not real visitors but automated hits from Shopify servers or bots, which can skew your metrics like CTR.

A few ways to handle it:

  1. Use GA4 filters: Create a filter to exclude internal Shopify traffic by hostname or IP ranges (Shopify sometimes provides the IP ranges).

  2. Use Google Tag Manager: You can set up triggers to ignore traffic from certain referrers or sources.

  3. Ignore in reports: If filtering is too tricky, you can exclude traffic sources in your GA4 reports when analyzing performance.

It’s normal and happens to many stores. Shopify recommends GA4 because it gives more flexible filtering options than the older analytics.

Thanks for this. It is very annoying wht shopify do it.
