Any way to exclude a collection from a sale

Hi guys, I’m looking to exclude a particular collection from a coupon sale. The sale is on the entire store unless the product is in the “new product” collection. I have not found a way to do that effectively. Just wondering if anyone has ran into this issue and how you resolved it.

This would be easy if you could make collections based off if a product tag is NOT equal to something, for instance adding a tag “not-for-sale” to your collection you want to exclude and then making a collection where product tag is not equal to “not-for-sale”. It’s been a request for a while but I don’t see Shopify doing anything about it. What you could do is export all of your products aside from the collection you want to exclude, and add a tag to the rest of the products like “discount code applies”, and reupload the CSV and overwrite the products. Then make a collection and auto populate it with product tag - is equal to - discount-code-applies, and then select that collection when you generate the code.

Hello! We just developed an app for creating collections from smart collections while excluding tags - https://apps.shopify.com/advanced-custom-collections

So you can create a collection excluding any products tagged ‘sale’ and create a discount code for it. It auto syncs so you don’t have to worry when you update or create new products. Please try it out and let us know your feedback!

If you want to have a sitewide sale and exclude items with a certain tag, is there a limit to the amount of products you can include in the sale? We use Launchpad and it has a maximum of 1000 products that can be discounted in a collection.

@nbehler for the Advanced Collections app, there is no limit to the number of products in a collection which excludes tags. However, Launchpad has the 1000 products limit you mentioned, and the app does not currently have the feature to split collections into multiple ones with 1000 products or less as a workaround.

For the time being, perhaps you can consider using another discount app for sales with more than 1000 products in a collection e.g. Bold Discounts, in conjunction with the Advanced Collections app.

In 2021 this seems to still be an issue - Created a video to help as a workaround without any apps, just a few automated collections by creating a collection that doesn’t have products on sale, hope it may help:

yes they need to incorporate excluding tags or collections from discounts. I want to offer 10% off to new customers on full price items only, but there is no way around it without spending more money on third party apps!
