Our store is selling an at-home ring carving kit. Our customers are sent the kit, and send us back the molds to be cast into rings. We need to be able to identify which mold belongs which which customer/order, and ideally be able to send the molds directly to production. We’re looking for a way for our Shopify store to automatically add serial numbers to all of our kit orders (which would then need to be searchable, and included on their CRM and invoice), and are running into a brick wall. Has anyone been able to figure this out? We’ve been scoring the message boards and only discovering dead ends!
If you’re still looking for a solution, you may want to try Serializer - Product Tracking. The app allows you to select which product variants you want to track. Whenever a trackable product sells, the app automatically generates a unique searchable item ID (which can be used as a serial number). The app associates the generated ID with the order, line item and customer. The item information is stored in order metafields, so other parts of Shopify can easily access it, e.g. invoice email notifications, order printing apps (supporting custom templates with order metafields), etc.
