I am selling my brand assets and stock, but closing my store and social media accounts. The brand and stock will be integrated into the new owner’s business. My question is about the time after I have closed the store - how secure is the closure? If the new owner owns the domain and business brand assets, and applies to Shopify to re-open the store, how will Shopify know that it isn’t the original owner requesting this? Will they be deemed as the new owner of the store by Shopfiy, because they have the required credentials and allowed to re-open the store ?
Once closed, your store can’t be reopened with old credentials. The new owner can start a new store with the same branding. Shopify may verify ownership through credentials and domain proof.
Hi, Thanks. I believe all the old / original credentials can re-open a store. However, that isn’t what I want to do. Yes, they can start a look alike store from the beginning, if they wanted to. It is the verifying of credentials that I am concerned about as they will have most of the verified credentials, but not all of them. Need to know if Shopify require 100 % correct credentials of is it an 80%. I am struggling to get clarity on this from Shopify.
When you transfer ownership of your brand assets, stock, and domain to a new owner, and you close your store and social media accounts, the security of the closure depends on how the transfer process is handled. Shopify typically ties store access to specific account credentials, including email addresses, password, and two-factor authentication if enabled. Suppose the new owner has the necessary credentials to access the Shopify account, such as the email linked to the store and login information, and they can verify ownership through Shopify’s process. In that case, they may be able to re-open or manage the store. However, Shopify should have systems in place to verify the identity of the account holder before granting full access, especially in the event of a transfer. The new owner, once they have been granted the appropriate access and can provide necessary documentation, will likely be recognized as the new owner by Shopify, as long as they have control over the account and the required permissions. It is crucial that you ensure all credentials, including any email accounts associated with the store, are fully transferred to the new owner and that any recovery options are updated. If you have concerns, it might be a good idea to contact directly to confirm the specifics of the transfer and ensure there are no issues during or after the process.
Hi @Gailforce
When you close your Shopify store, Shopify does not permanently delete the data right away, but the account remains inaccessible without proper credentials. If the new owner has the domain and brand assets, they won’t automatically have access to your Shopify store unless you transfer ownership to them before closing it.
If you want the new owner to continue using the same store, transfer ownership in Shopify’s settings instead of closing it. And if you close the store, Shopify will only allow reactivation by someone with the original login details.
