Topic summary

Main issue: Setting up Shopify Payments in Sweden without a registered business.

Key guidance:

  • Shopify Payments requires registering a Shopify Payments account. You must provide identity and business details (e.g., name if sole proprietor, business/trade name, address, email, phone, business ID/registration number).
  • Shopify may also collect personal information about beneficial owners/principals (name, birth date, government ID number).
  • Terms of Service outline registration as a sole proprietor or as a corporation/other legal entity. Supported countries/regions are linked for verification.

Alternatives if not using Shopify Payments:

  • Activate an alternative payment method in Settings > Payments > Alternative Payments > Choose alternative payment, then connect and Activate.

Additional suggestion:

  • Another participant links to a community thread discussing using Stripe with Shopify as a potential path. No details or confirmation provided in this thread.

Status:

  • No confirmed workaround for using Shopify Payments without business information. Practical options are to meet the identity/business requirements (including sole proprietor) or use alternative payment gateways. Discussion remains open.

Hi @Aghd ,

There are some requirements that need to be met in order to enable Shopify Payments on your store. There is also some information that is collected by Shopify to be able to identify Merchant’s who use Shopify Payments and their business. I’ll share more information regarding this below.

In order to use Shopify Payments for your business, you are required to register for a Shopify Payments Account. When you register for a Shopify Payments Account, we will collect information such as your name (if you are a sole proprietor), your business or trade name, your address, email, phone number, business identification or registration number, and certain other information that we require. We may also collect personal information (including name, birth date, and government-issued identification number) about your beneficial owners or principals.

I’d like to share a few resources for better readability. The first resource is for more information on the supported countries and regions for Shopify Payments from our Help Center. The second resource is our **Shopify Payments Terms of Service **that outlines more information on registering your business as a sole proprietor or a corporation or other legal entity.

Additionally, if you don’t want to use Shopify Payments, you do have the option of looking into alternative payment methods. I will share the steps below on how to activate alternative payment methods on your store.

  • From your Shopify admin, head to Settings > Payments section.
  • In the Alternative Payments section, select Choose alternative payment.
  • Choose a provider from the list.
  • Enter your account credentials for the provider you chose.
  • Click Activate to enable the provider.

If you’re not sure what alternative payment gateways / methods are available in your region, I’ll share this resource on ways to accept payments in Sweden.
