Can't change currency after transfer store to owner

Topic summary

Issue: After transferring a Shopify store to a client, the client couldn’t change the currency while selecting a plan. Urgency noted as the live site was affected.

Key distinctions clarified:

  • Store currency (what customers see at checkout) vs. Billing currency (the currency used to pay Shopify invoices).
  • Store currency path: Settings > Store Details > Store Currency. This becomes locked once any sales occur.

Resolution and rationale:

  • If sales have been made, only Shopify Support can change the store currency due to risks (reports don’t convert, product prices don’t auto-update, and apps/gift cards/shipping rates may be affected).
  • OP contacted Support via the provided link and had the currency changed; issue resolved.

Billing currency option:

  • Can be changed at Settings > Billing > Change Currency if local currency billing is supported (UK GBP, India INR, Canada CAD, Singapore SGD, EU EUR). INR changes are restricted when invoices are outstanding.

Current status:

  • Original case resolved after support intervention. A new participant asked how to contact Support; the thread includes a support link for reaching advisors (https://bit.ly/3xPak59).

Hi @Krishna12 ,

You can refer https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/selling-and-getting-paid-in-different-currencies#changing-your-store-currency

Did you follow the following instructions?

Hi there @Krishna12

Thanks for reaching out.

I understand that you have recently transferred a store to a client, and they are trying to change the currency but are noticing that they cannot.

Are you referring to the store currency that customers would see when placing orders on the store, or do you mean the billing currency which is the currency that the merchant would pay their Shopify bills in?

For the Store Currency: This can usually be changed in Settings > Store Details > Store Currency however if any sales have been made on the store, then this setting will be locked. The Account Owner will need to reach out to our support team using this link here, and one of our support advisors can assist with changing the store currency.

The reason this setting is locked when sales are made is for safety reasons, because it can actually cause some damage when changed accidentally. The reporting for previous sales/reports doesn’t convert to the new currency, and also the listed prices of products will not convert, so they need to be reviewed to ensure the correct amount is being charged. Other things that can be affected include apps that interact with currency, gift cards with remaining balances and also shipping rates.

For the Billing Currency: If the store is in a country/region where local currency billing is supported, then you can opt to receive and pay Shopify issued bills in a local currency instead of in USD. Currently, local currency billing is available for merchants who are located in the United Kingdom (GBP), India (INR), Canada (CAD), Singapore (SGD), and the European Union (EUR). Navigating to Settings > Billing > Change Currency should allow you to change this. It’s important to note that changes to and from the INR (Indian Rupee) currency will be restricted if there are any outstanding invoices on the store.

If the above information does not address your currency query, then please feel free to share more context here and either myself or others in the Community will do our best to help you out! Looking forward to hearing back.

@Rick_14
