Checkout on Facebook and Instagram - Calculated Shipping Rates?

Topic summary

Meta is requiring shops to use its upgraded checkout for Facebook and Instagram by April 24, 2024, prompting concern about maintaining shipping rate parity. The store uses Advanced Shipping Rules (a third‑party app) for dynamic/calculated rates and found Meta/Shopify docs unclear—especially notes that carrier-calculated rates aren’t available and references to “standard” shipping options.

After enabling Meta Checkout to test, all dynamic shipping profiles from Advanced Shipping Rules carried over cleanly without extra setup. Shipping parity was maintained between Shopify and Meta channels.

Order processing showed an initial “Authorized/On hold” status, but payment was captured within minutes and the order flowed to the warehouse like a normal Shopify order. This behavior differed slightly from Meta’s documentation but did not impact fulfillment.

Outcome: Concern resolved through testing. Third‑party app–based calculated rates worked with Meta Checkout, despite ambiguous guidance in the documentation. The discussion appears closed with no outstanding questions.

Currently our Facebook & Instagram Shops simply link to the product on our Shopify website. However, as of April 24th, 2024 Meta is forcing using their “upgraded” checkout connected to Shopify Admin or shops will no longer be visible.

Our biggest concern at the moment is shipping rate parity. We use calculated shipping rates through Advanced Shipping Rules in Shopify. Combing through documentation and YouTube videos I still can’t get a clear view if those shipping rates will be pulled across to checkout on Instagram and Facebook or if we will have reconsider our shipping configuration in order to maintain parity.

At time of writing we’re not quite willing to just make the change to see what happens so any insight would be much appreciated!

For future reference:

  • It seems like we over thought it. We eventually decided to enable Meta Checkout to test and all of our dynamic shipping profiles from Advanced Shipping Rules cleanly ported over without any fuss.
  • Order processing does not look to follow Meta’s documentation on the subject. There was an ‘Authorized’ / 'On hold" status, but payment was collected within a few minutes and it processed through to our warehouse like a normal Shopify order.
