Chnaging my shopify store to my custom domain name

Greetings,

In the process of setting up my store (still on the 14-day free trial) - I went to Settings > Domains and typed in my Custom Domain and set it as the primary domain.

It is registered at go daddy - so I followed the Connect instructions for Go Daddy.

However, the screen said that my custom domain couldn’t be Verified at the time - and to check back later to Verify it.

Does it have to Propagate first (which can take up to 48 Hours) before I can Verify my custom domain?

I keep checking back to my domain settings - but it still says "check back later to Verify this domain.

Please let me know What I have to do to make my custom domain name - the domain name that a customer types into her/his browser to get to my Shopify store - as I don’t want to use the too long “StoreName.MyShopify.com” domain name that is the default for a new shopify store?

Note:

It would have been a whole lot easier - to point the DNS for my custom domain - at godaddy - to the shopify dns - but I didn’t see that as an option in Settings > Domains

Thanks,

Sanford 1

Hi @sanford1

The DNS does need to finish propagating before the domain can be verified. The setup process for auto-connect through Go Daddy should have updated the Go Daddy address DNS information and you should see that reflected in your Go Daddy domain administrator account.

If you do not see that reflected then I would go ahead and manually update the DNS information yourself. You can find the steps for that in our Help Center here: Connect your third-party domain to Shopify manually · Shopify Help Center

The DNS information that needs to be changed are:

You can have only one A record and one www CNAME record associated with your domain. If your domain already has an A record or www CNAME record, then you need to change these records to point to Shopify. You can have multiple CNAME records associated with your domain, but each one must have a unique name, such as www or shop.

Shay,

Thanks - got my custom domain setup…Now, I need to:

1. Use your Shopify password page as your coming soon page

I found this Link:

https://www.shopify.com/blog/coming-soon-page#3

However, the instructions are too vague and thus it is Unclear how to accomplish setting up a coming soon page…

For instance - if you click the “going to your preferences” link in the below instructions - you will see that it takes you to a page that says the following:

Unable to access Kinda Hot Sauce

It looks like you don’t have access to this store. Contact the store administrator for access.

Instructions - found in this link https://www.shopify.com/blog/coming-soon-page#3

1. Use your Shopify password page as your coming soon page

The fastest way to launch your coming soon page on Shopify is to use your password page. By default, most password pages have the basic necessities of a coming soon page (an email signup form, social sharing buttons, etc.). This is recommended if you just want a simple placeholder page to explain your business and build your email list as you build your store.

Since it’s password protected, you can also allow select people to view your website-in-progress simply by giving them the password.

You can turn on your Shopify store’s password page by going to your Preferences and choosing Enable password. While you’re there, you can also customize your main message to visitors and explain what you plan to launch. It’s much easier than building a maintenance mode page using WordPress or HTML.

However, to finish setting up your password page as a coming soon page, you’ll need to head over to your theme editor and customize it directly using the drag and drop website builder. You’ll be able to turn on the newsletter signup field and add additional copy to frame your form.

Shay - can you provide Correct instructions on How To -

1. Use your Shopify password page as your coming soon page ??

Thanks,

Shay,

I think I figured this out:

The instructions should have read:

Go to

Sales Channels > Online Store > Preferences and then scroll down the page to find the Password Protection section.

Shay,

Ok, so I was able to type in the password - to my password protected home page - to allow me access to my online store.

Now, I want to reset the password - so that I can again view the password protected page - that I would see if I didn’t have the password.

However, the “Restrict access to visitors with the password” checkbox is grayed-out - so I am Unable to check it - to make the password protected home page show again…

Please let me know - How to Un-Gray it - so that I can again see the password protected page?

Thanks,

Hi @sanford1

Glad you were able to figure that out and move onto the next step. To confirm, you are not able to select/deselect this field in your Online Store > Preferences? (see screenshot below)

If that is the case, I would actually recommend chatting in with our live support for assistance. Since I don’t have access to your store admin to review the status of the account that will be faster and much more effective way of getting this resolved.

You can follow this link: Contact Support, sign into your merchant account, choose the appropriate topic for support and then select your preferred love support option.
