Is there any way to use the standard code snippet from Merchant Center so that the customer has the opportunity to opt into Google Customer Reviews after a purchase?
I seems crazy that we have to rely on a 3rd party app to enable this extremely basic functionality. I don’t want product reviews, widgets, or any of the other extras the apps are offering, let alone paying for a subsciption - I just want to collect basic Google Customer Reviews, for free, as intended by design.
Are you looking for a Review link that redirects to your business to Google review panel directly?
If that works, that you can find it on your Google Business.
If you are looking to integrate the Google review inside your site, and ask for the review from your site (not on Google), then you will either need a custom code or need third party app.
Thank you,

No… Google Customer Reviews (survey opt-in after purchase), not Google Business Reviews (Google Maps).
It seems the simple popup snippet on the thank you page no longer works. You now must use a 3rd party app which will trigger an additional page that runs the script, which is overall less efficient.
from my experience, collecting Google reviews isn’t just about sending one automatic email and hoping for the best. What really helps is making the whole process feel personal and easy for customers. For example, after a purchase, send a friendly, short thank-you message that includes a clear, simple call-to-action with the review link—don’t bury it in long emails.
Also, try mixing it up a bit: send a reminder if they haven’t responded in a few days, but keep it casual and helpful. Some stores even add a small incentive like a discount on the next order, which works surprisingly well.
One fresh idea I’m experimenting with is using QR codes on the packing slip or product packaging, so customers can quickly scan and leave a review right away. It feels more immediate and less like an email task.
Bottom line: make it easy, personal, and if you can, add a little nudge or incentive. That combo gets way better results than just relying on automation alone.
I don’t think we are talking about the same thing here. It is pretty standard nowadays to be asked to ‘opt-in’ to a review on the checkout thank-you page. About a week later Google will send the customer an email with a star rating selection.
This functionality used to work in Shopify, but they have since removed it.
From what i understood, you are looking to add Google opt-in on Checkout page page.
For checkout page, you need to have a Shopify Plus account.
Since you said, that it used to work, I guess you’ve already enabled Customer Reviews on your Google Merchant Center & have configured Customer Privacy settings.
In order to add the google customer review opt-in, you can do this from Shopify Admin → Settings → Custom Events & add the JS Code that you got from Google Merchant Center.
The code should be something similar to
This should enable the Review Optin on your system.

All the previous replies, are not aware of the restrictions I’m explaining below.
Google Customer Reviews requires a popup to work, the new Shopify Pixels, prohibits popups, and that is why it doesnt work. So you need to use an app, to setup redirects, to make then it work.
So popups are not allowed anymore, and you have to redirect the customer from the thankyou page to another page that will allow the Google popup, creating an additional step.
Why would Shopify break the flow of the only method Google provides to collect customer reviews?
I’m assuming all of the supported aggregators would work the same way - a 2 step process? Does any method support opting in via a single click on the thankyou page?
Shopify, like many other e-commerce platforms, has updated its policies to comply with PCI-DSS version 4.0.1. These standards are designed to protect customers from fraud. In essence, they prohibit third-party scripts from modifying the checkout process.
As a result, it is no longer possible to add custom scripts to Shopify’s checkout pages.
If you’re seriously involved in e-commerce, it’s highly recommended that you read the official release: Just Published: PCI DSS v4.0.1
I am still allowed to use custom pixels today, but very soon Shopify are removing this ability and there is still no solution other than a paid 3rd party app or Shopify’s ridiculously expensive Plus plan which is not an option for most businesses.
You are right, custom pixels are not being taken away - custom scripts on checkout page ARE being taken away and this is where I have my Google Reviews script. I tried adding it as a custom pixel but it doesn’t work.
I think I’m right in saying however that once they take away the custom scripts option (August 2026 for non plus members) we will be unable to request customers Opt In to Google Reviews / survey because popups are blocked on checkout page. Is that correct?
There are apparently Apps that allow this, but they cost money.
For apps, or solutions that use popups, yes, you can not use it in custom pixels. I recommend that you use an app as mentioned in my previous reply. Or you use a different review platform such as judgme or loox.
