Cursor bug in customizer

Topic summary

A cursor bug in Shopify’s theme customizer is preventing users from editing sections. The issue occurs when clicking dropdown icons in sections with blocks (like multicolumn) — the cursor changes to a drag/grabbing hand icon and becomes unresponsive, making it impossible to open section settings.

Key Details:

  • Bug appears across multiple themes (Dawn, Horizon), suggesting it’s platform-wide rather than theme-specific
  • Started appearing after a Shopify admin update several weeks ago
  • Users must constantly save and refresh to temporarily regain functionality
  • Shopify support claims it’s device-related, not a platform issue

Attempted Workarounds:

  • Disabling “Tap twice and drag to multi-select” in Windows 11 touchpad settings fixes the cursor issue but prevents dragging blocks entirely
  • Connecting an external mouse resolved the problem for some users, but others report the bug persists even with external mice

Current Status:
The issue remains unresolved. Shopify support has not provided a timeline for a fix, and the discussion remains ongoing with no official solution.

There is a cursor bug in shopify theme customizer which is preventing editing.
The bug comes when you just open a theme customizer and click twice on a dropdown icon of multicolumn or any section which have blocks inside then the cursor will be changed to drag cursor but nothing is being dragged and now you cant open the section settings to edit it. Whatever you do the drag cursor will not change back to default cursor.
I dont think this is a theme issue, it starts happening after the new editor update copule of weeks ago.
Does anyone else facing it?
Is there any fix for this without trying to avoid it?

Edit: I just found out there are more ways to create this bug.

Yes, I’m having this issue too, for the past couple of weeks. Mine becomes unresponsive after 1–2 clicks. The cursor changes to a little grabbing hand, and the dropdown arrows disappear so I can’t open any sections. I have to save and refresh constantly, but even then it stays glitchy.

Same, its occurring with both Dawn and the new Horizon theme, so agree its not theme specific. I’ve noticed it happening since Shopify updated the admin. I have reached out to support but they are trying to say its device related, and not a Shopify issue.

The issue it being discussed here too https://community.shopify.com/c/technical-q-a/why-does-my-cursor-converts-into-grabbing-hand-icon-and-then-i/m-p/3056833

In windows 11, I found out if we uncheck the third setting- Tap twice and drag to multi-select then it fixes the issue but the trade off is that now you cant drag anything.
Shopify needs to fix this issue for windows 11, really bad editor update.

Not really a solution though, if we can’t drag blocks around. A real solution would be Shopify actually fixing the issue!!

I have already tried the suggested solutions, including disabling the touchpad from settings as you advised, but unfortunately, the issue still wasn’t resolved. However, once I connected a wireless mouse to my laptop, the problem was completely resolved — the Shopify customizer started working perfectly. So, the final and effective solution in my case was simply connecting an external mouse.

I hope this turns out to be a helpful solution for others facing the same issue as well.

Try connecting a mouse — it might resolve the issue for you as we

This issue is related to the laptop touchpad, not Shopify. Try connecting a mouse — it should resolve the problem.

Bro I am using external mouse only and the issue is there for me

Is everyone still experiencing this issue? I’ve been in contact with Shopify support and they wont put a timeline on a solution which usually means months of waiting.
