Display customer order history by line item?

Imagine being a sales clerk in a retail store. A customer is looking for recommendations based on past purchases. Pulling up an order history and clicking through to each order individually isn’t practical, but if you had a list of products purchased by a customer on a single screen, that would expediate the sales process.

Is there a way to quickly look at order history for a particular customer, by line item rather than order summary?

Hey, @EricJackson .

Thanks for reaching out. Are you looking to see past orders for specific customers?

If you are, you’ll be able to see past orders with products a customer has ordered, right on the Customers page of the Shopify Admin. To access this, you can login to your Shopify Admin, then click on Customers and click on the name of the customer you wish to view.

You will be able to view details like their name, default address, last order placed (which includes their order history with products), tax settings, email marketing, tags and the customer timeline.

Here is a screenshot from my test store of what this looks like:

Customers can also create a customer account on your store, this would allow them to view their own order history from their customer account page on your storefront.

Is this what you were looking to accomplish?

Thanks for your reply @Tira . I am looking to see the order history of customers, but broken down by line item. The method you described allows one to generate a list of past orders (where each line is a single order summary). I want to see list of line item history for a single customer, spanning multiple orders.

Thanks for clarifying, @EricJackson .

I’m happy to dig into this further for you. Just to make sure we’re on the same page, do you have an example of what you’re looking to accomplish?

I would love to know!

Talk soon,

She means she wants to pull up a client and see all of the items they have ordered before. I agree. We would love a way to be able to look up and item and see if the customer already has ordered it. We have about an 83% return customer rate and many clients have most of the items so we would love to be able to create looks for them based off items they dont have! Begging! Customer profile cards where we can list what they like or dont or what their shopping preferences are would be amazing too and they kind of tie together!

The equivalent of a customer profile card is a CRM platform, and there are
several excellent solutions for that that integrate with Shopify. So that’s
part of the battle anyway.

I have this same issue and would like to see all items a customer ordered without having to open all orders individually. This is still is not a built-in Shopify feature it seems. What is the best way to do something like this?

Were you ever able to find a solution for this? I’m currently searching for an app or ANY way to do this. I have some customers with several hundred orders and there is no way I’m going to search through all of them to find one item.

Nothing satisfactory. We are using the Report Toaster app to produce a line
item report, but it’s not a great solution for brick and mortar sales.

Hi Eric - Sam here from Report Toaster. Glad to hear you at least have a partial solution using our app. Would love to understand how it could become a complete solution. Feel free to send a private message if you’d rather. Thanks!!

Hey Sam, thanks for chiming in!

In the context of Shopify POS, Report Toaster would be a complete solution in this instance if it could auto-populate the customer ID from the cart into the line item report.

So the workflow would look something like this:

  • Add the customer to cart in POS.
  • Tap on a tile that links to a specified Report Toaster custom report.
  • Autofill the customer ID in that report.

Hope that makes sense. Happy to jump on a quick call to clarify if you prefer.

Hi there,

I think I’m following and is possible, but a call couldn’t hurt. I will send you a message with a link to my calendar and we can talk it out.

Thanks,
Sam

Hi @EricJackson

Claudia here from Better Reports.

Have you been able to find a solution with Shopify? If not, I would recommend our app Better Reports for this.

We can create a line item report showing products and quantity sold, filtered by customer name or email. This report can be made available from POS where you can change the customer data in the filter.

In addition to this, Better Reports has more than 60 built-in reports available out of the box that cover many common use cases for merchants. You can schedule reports to run at set frequencies to your email or Google Drive or export the reports in CSV, Excel or PDF format.

I encourage you to install Better Reports and start your free 14-day trial and I’ll be happy to set this up for you.

What do you think?

Hey Claudia,

Thanks for reaching out. 150 USD per month in a little rich for my blood.
Cheers!

A quick and dirty way is to go to Analytics | Reports and look for the built-in report named Sales By Product. Open this report and change the filter from Products to Customers and save the report as Sales by Customer. This will give you a list of what the customer bought and how many in the specified reporting period. Change the reported period as needed.

Sam,

This is an old thread, but I wonder if the answer has changed. We use some third-party apps that are now able to auto-populate the customer from the Shopify POS cart into their app. So this is my humble feature request for Report Toaster: many brick-and-mortar retailers would jump at the opportunity to take advantage of Report Toaster’s excellent reporting if it could be accessed in Shopify POS and auto-populate query fields from cart data.
