Email Forwarding - Email forwarding is not allowed for this domain

Topic summary

Users purchasing new domains through Shopify are encountering an error when attempting to add MX records for third-party email providers (primarily Zoho and Google Workspace): “Email forwarding is not allowed for this domain.”

Root Cause:
Starting December 2024, Shopify disabled the Email Hosting & Forwarding feature for all new domain purchases as part of a platform update to “streamline services and improve overall performance.”

Resolution Process:

  • This is not a user-fixable issue and requires Shopify support intervention
  • Users must contact Shopify support via live chat to request manual re-enablement
  • Support escalates cases to technical teams who restore the feature on a per-domain basis
  • Resolution typically takes 2-5 minutes once connected with the right support agent, though some cases require escalation and longer wait times

Workarounds:

  • Switch to CloudFlare nameservers and manage DNS records there (requires technical knowledge)
  • For Zoho specifically: Navigate to Domains → Email Forwarding → “Switch to email hosting” → Select Zoho Mail and enter only the verification code portion

Current Status:
No platform-wide fix announced. Each affected user must individually contact support for manual resolution.

Hi all,

I recently registered my new domain through Shopify and have set up Zoho as my mail provider.

When I try and add the required MX records to my domain I receive the following error:

“Email forwarding is not allowed for this domain”

Any help is much appreciated!

Having same issue. Did this ever resolve itself for you?

No not yet.
I spoke with support and they said it was an issue with a recent upgrade to their domain server. They told me to try again today, but I still haven’t had any luck with it

They have it in place, however there seems to be an issue with it according to the helpdesk. I haven’t been able to resolve this yet. No updates from them either.

I’m facing the same issue guys. I cannot validate the MX-records of Zoho in my Shopify domain settings. I’d be glad to hear if someone has a solution for this!

The solution would be if we all start spamming live chat with the same issue maybe then they will wake up

I’m having the very same issue, I cannot add any MX record nor setup third-party email hosting (Google Workplace).

Very annoying, I wish I had bought the domain on Google Workplace instead…
