Fake Stores Installing My App to Send Spam Emails

Topic summary

A developer of a Shopify email marketing app is experiencing an increasing problem with fake stores installing their application. Over the past year, spam accounts using clearly fraudulent stores have been installing the app, apparently to send bulk spam emails through the platform.

The developer currently handles this by manually deleting these accounts, but finds the process annoying and time-consuming.

Another user has responded seeking clarification about the technical details—specifically how these fake accounts are able to send bulk emails and whether the issue stems from specific email functionality within the app itself or from a third-party email service provider.

The discussion remains open, with the original poster yet to provide additional technical details. The developer is also seeking to understand if other Shopify app developers face similar spam and abuse issues.

I run an email marketing app on Shopify. I have noticed in the past year or so, more and more spam accounts are installing my app on clearly fake stores. I just manually delete these accounts but it is pretty annoying. Seems like they are doing it to then send out bulk spam emails using my application.

I know fake accounts are common for shops themselves, but I’m wondering if other app developers have experienced this type of spam / abuse?

Hi @mattbrown7531

Sorry to hear about case, and true there are high amount of fake stores.

Can you share how they send those bulk emails? Does your app have some specific email functionality or they are just using your your 3rd part service/email provider?
