Can you please explain Goggle Merchant tags vs Shopify Tags and how much goggle really wants to see? Should we be entering both?
Topic summary
The question concerns whether to use both Google Merchant Center tags and Shopify tags, and what Google requires.
Key Distinctions:
- Shopify tags (via Google & YouTube app): Track Google Analytics, Google Ads, and free listings for Google Merchant Center
- Google Merchant Center tag: Only tracks free listings
Recommended Setup:
- If tracking is enabled through the Google & YouTube app with GA4 configured, you can link it directly in Google Merchant Center
- Access integration settings at: merchants.google.com/mc/linkedaccounts/integrations
- Conversion tracking options can be managed at: merchants.google.com/mc/conversionsettings
Implication: Using the Shopify Google & YouTube app provides broader tracking capabilities, potentially eliminating the need for a separate Google Merchant Center tag if comprehensive tracking is already in place.

The shopify tags via the google and youtube app (assuming this is what you meant), is to track both Google Analytics and Google Ads, as well as free listings for Google Merchant Center.
The Google Merchant Center tag, is only for free listings.
So if you have tracking enabled using the google and youtube app, and GA4 is setup. You can link it here: https://merchants.google.com/mc/linkedaccounts/integrations
And you can then if you want check the settings here too to enable or disable parts of the tracking options: https://merchants.google.com/mc/conversionsettings
