How can I differentiate between cities and counties in my Irish shipping addresses?

My shop is in Ireland and I ship to Ireland, the UK and Europe. My issue with shipping to Ireland is that customers have to select a County from a dropdown list (the counties are just listed without the prefix County or Co.). So when I receive an order notification I cannot distinguish whether the address is in a city, e.g. Dublin or in the county of Dublin, e.g. Co. Dublin. Is there any way I can change the content dropdown to prefix the counties with “Co.” and add the cities to it (e.g. Waterford city, Cork city, Dublin city, etc.). The list would have for example both Dublin and Co. Dublin in the dropdown.

I literally have to lookup every address to see if it is a county or a city I have to ship to.

With the way the checkout for Ireland is currently formatted, those prefixes do not come before the county, but a way to distinguish this is to remember that the last field before the city is always above the county if the address is in Ireland. It goes as follows under Shipping Address:

  1. First name & Last name
  2. Address
  3. Apartment, suite, etc. (optional)
  4. City
  5. County
  6. Postal Code
  7. Country

If you’re still having issues with it, could you please send me a screenshot blurring out any specific address details from a customer and just showing me the City and County sections that you are finding indistinguishable so that I can take a closer look? This is just so I have an example to show this to you from.

Hi, I know this is a very late reply, probably as I have been holding my head in my hands for a very long time.

It is very simple. The dropdown for the counties within Ireland are set without the prefix “Co.”, so I cannot distinguish whether it is a County or a City, for example one can live in Galway the city, but also in Co. Galway. Same for Carlow and Co. Carlow, Cork and Co. Cork, Limerick and Co. Limerick. I constantly have to Google the address to find out whether it is the city they live in or the county. So why not have it in the Country dropdown as follows:

  1. not applicable (because the customer already filled out field 4. to identify the city)

  2. Co. Carlow

  3. Co. Cavan

  4. Co. Clare,

  5. Co. Cork

  6. Co. Donegal

etc.
