How come I am able to upload image exceeding 20MP?

Topic summary

A user successfully uploaded an image exceeding Shopify’s stated 20MP (megapixel) limit and questioned why this was possible.

Key clarification:

  • Initial confusion arose between MB (megabytes) and MP (megapixels)
  • The uploaded screenshot was 3.4MB, below the 20MB file size limit
  • However, the image dimensions (1918x759) did exceed typical megapixel restrictions

Resolution:

  • A Shopify representative confirmed that both MB and MP limitations exist for image uploads
  • Directed users to the Help Center’s “Uploading Images” documentation for detailed calculations and specifications
  • The discrepancy between stated limits and actual upload capability remains unexplained in the thread

Hey guys,

Not really an issue or anything I was just curious on how come Shopify allowed me to upload and use an image that exceed 20MP, when usually it doesn’t?

I think there is some confusion here because In the screenshot this image is 3.4MB which is lower than 20MB limit

MP (megapixels) not MB

Interesting never heard of 20MP limit.

Hey @farid-movsumov

Just wanted to confirm that yes, there is both a MB (Megabyte) and MP (Megapixel) limitation to images. You can find the calculations for this in our Help Center: Uploading Images.
