How do I change the PayPal account connected to Facebook and Instagram shop

Topic summary

A merchant needs to switch the PayPal account receiving payouts from Facebook and Instagram shop sales after opening a new PayPal account for a separate business.

Initial Suggested Solution:

  • Remove and re-add PayPal in Shopify admin > Settings > Payments
  • Login with the new PayPal account during re-connection
  • Note: Refunds on old orders may still pull from the new account

Problem:
This standard approach did not resolve the issue. Both Meta and Shopify blamed each other, leaving the merchant stuck manually reconciling payments for months.

Working Solution:
Access a hidden Facebook-specific PayPal settings page by adding this path to your Shopify admin URL:

/admin/settings/apps/app_installations/app/facebook-ads/payments

This reveals a separate PayPal connection exclusively for Facebook/Instagram sales, distinct from general Shopify payment settings. Multiple users confirmed this solution successfully resolved their issue.

I opened a new PayPal account to separate my new business from my old business. The issue is I have connected meta to Shopify but it is still using my old PayPal to send me customer funds from purchases. How do I switch my PayPal payouts account???

Go into your Shopify admin > settings > payments > remove the PayPal payment gateway > re-add the PayPal payment gateway.

When you re-add PayPal, it should prompt you to login to your PayPal account in order to complete the sync … you’ll be able to login to your new PayPal account, and then that should fix things moving forward.

Note: After you do this, if you grant a refund on any past orders (from before the change), then it should pull the refund from your new PayPal account (not the old one).

Hi Nally, were you ever able to fix this issue? I’m going through the same problem.

Absolutely not. All I’ve gotten over these past few months is the runaround from both Facebook and shopify. They seem to keep both equally blaming one another for being responsible for the solution so that resulted in a bunch of run around and waste of my time. I have relented to having the meta payment goals to the outdated PayPal and manually fixing them when I do accounting. Should you find a solution do let me know because I have gotten no help from meta nor shopify.

I got the same response from Meta & Shopify. However, after much digging, I finally found a solution that worked! I’m not sure if it’ll work for you, but here’s what I did:

There’s a different way to link PayPal to FB and Instagram. Simply going to Settings> Payments, isn’t it.

To access the Paypal linked to your Facebook, you need to add this to the end of your .myshopify.com URL:

/admin/settings/apps/app_installations/app/facebook-ads/payments

The full URL should look like something like this:

https://admin.shopify.com/store/xxxxxx/admin/settings/apps/app_installations/app/facebook-ads/payments

You’ll see a whole different page with a PayPal linking option. This is exclusively for Facebook. Change the PayPal connection to the one you want, and it should work.
