How does Shopify prevent fraud by its own stores?

I read with interest the fraud filters etc to prevent bogus orders, but how does Shopify prevent fraud from it’s own store fronts? What sort of checks and balances does it make to ensure those that sign up to open a store are not fraudulent themselves? Is there a complaint process that can be followed by a consumer?

Thank you

Jon

Hi @s416a ,

Thanks for reaching out. Great question.

While we believe the free and open exchange of ideas and products is a crucial tenet of commerce, some activities are incompatible with Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone. Therefore, this Acceptable Use Policy (“AUP”) describes prohibited activities connected with your use of the Services.

Shopify absolutely does not condone any type of fraudulent activity on the platform. If a consumer has an issue with the store and believes the store is with Shopify, we would highly encourage them to fill out our form to Report an AUP Violation so that our dedicated team can further investigate.

@Iris , or other Shopify staff:

I bought something from a Shopify store (“Martozi.com”) that required that I pay via an Affirm loan. I never received any shipping info but can see that the order was received in the Shop app. The store is now offline, and the scammers never responded to any communications of course.

Other than appealing to Affirm (which I have done), do I have any recourse via Shopify? I realize you are a platform with a set of tools, but do you have any way to reach out to the store owners? Is there anything you can help me with?

(Note that the Affirm relationship is very sticky – since I didn’t pay with a credit card or bank account, I cannot use their well-established fraud protection services. Affirm is incredibly obstructionist to deal with in this regard.)
