How does Shopify's shipping discount work?

That is a great question!

Shopify Shipping is a free to use feature that lets you connect your Shopify store with Shopify’s shipping carrier accounts. Using Shopify’s carrier accounts means you get access to discounted rates from various different carriers. The selection of carriers to choose from would depend on the location of your store and as of the time of this post, Shopify Shipping is available for orders shipped from the United States, Canada, Australia, France, and the United Kingdom. As well as having access to Shopify’s carrier accounts for cheaper rates, Shopify Shipping also includes the following benefits:

  • Rather than having to use flat shipping rates, you can display Carrier Calculated Shipping rates to your customers, and have the cost of shipping dynamically calculate in the checkout based on the weight/size of the order and where it is being shipped to.
  • Purchase shipping labels right from within your Shopify Admin, and get reduced prices for your shipping labels.
  • Print shipping labels directly from your Shopify admin which means you do not have to use any extra software or integrations.
  • No more trips to the post office to weigh and print shipping labels. You can schedule pickups instead.

If you are not in one of the support regions that include Shopify Shipping, you could consider looking into third party Carrier Calculated Shipping rates. This would require an extra charge of $20 per month on top of your Shopify Subscription (this is free if you are on an annual plan!) for access to the Carrier Calculated Shipping API. However, if you go this route you can add your own personal carrier accounts and have access to wider variety of carriers to choose from.
