We are putting together a site for a client where there is a free gift that their employees are eligible for, but only once a year. Is there a way to do that?

You mentioned that you’re designing a website for a client and would like to offer eligible employees a free gift. However, you’d like to limit this to once a year. That sounds pretty neat! Are you looking to apply this option to multiple products? I’d love to learn a bit more on what kind of website you’re working on.
You’ll first want to navigate to your Shopify admin > Products section, click into the specific product and mark it as $0 under Price. In order to have this specific product available to eligible employees for a limited amount of time will require a third-party app as this is not a native feature in the Shopify admin.
The app Limit Qty Purchase allows you to set a minimum or maximum quantity that can be purchased per individual product. You’re able to set a lifetime or fixed amount of days on a specific product quantity. To have this free gift be eligible for employees once a year, you’ll need to set restrictions on these specific products. That way, when an employee selects this product from the product page, they’ll be limited to choosing whatever you set the quantity to.
You may need to create some kind of employee log in so that they’re logged in under their employee credentials. The app will limit the quantity of product selected based on the conditions you’ve set for the email I.D. Guest checkout should be disabled to use this feature properly. I would like to advise that the third-party app mentioned above is designed by a third-party app developer. Sounds like this could have been a viable solution — which I need now. But the app Limit Qty Purchase is no longer available.
Anyone have success with other products? Limiting a customer to a purchase on one item that is only available to them once a year?

I understand that the first app option recommended is currently unavailable. Another option is to look into the app Order Limits - MinMaxify that allows you to place restrictions on specific products, a customers entire cart or a specific group of products. This app does not allow for customer limits or limits across multiple orders for a customer, so I’ve suggested a second option below.
A second app option is Order Limits (Min-Max). where you’re able to limit the minimum or maximum constraints on a product, limit based on items in cart, product tags etc.
Again, I recommend reaching out directly to the third-party app developers for more information on the apps features and benefits and if other restrictions can be applied.
