I gave one item a discount and it can be used only once. How do I make it so that a customer can not buy 10 of that 1 item and can only get one.

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’m happy to provide some assistance with discounts, to ensure this gets resolved.
This can successfully be achieved by setting the discount value to a Fixed Amount. To learn more about this discount type, you can check out our Amount Off Discounts document as it touches on this further.
It outlines however, that you can:

Head to the Discounts section, from the Shopify admin.

From the Discounts page, click Create discount.

From the Select discount type menu, click Amount off products.

Under METHOD, select Discount code.

In the Discount code section, do either of the following:
- Enter a name for the new discount code, for example,
15offnecklaces. - Click Generate code.
- Enter a name for the new discount code, for example,

In the Value section, select Fixed Amount and do the following:
- In the Applies To section, select Specific Products.
- Checkmark the Only Apply Discount Once Per Order box, as this will ensure that the discount value is only taken off one item.
- In the Customer eligibility section, select whether this discount applies to everyone, specific customer segments, or specific customers.
- To limit discount usage, in the Maximum discount uses section, check Limit to one per customer. This will limit the discount to one use per customer by tracking a customer’s email address or phone number.
- Set Active Dates.
- Click Save.
