I want to remove unnecessary customer tags from the suggestion. Is there a way to do it?

Goal: Remove obsolete customer tags from the tag suggestion/autocomplete list.
Current behavior: You can remove tags from individual customer records (via segment + bulk edit or CSV export/edit/re-import), but the tag values may still appear in suggestions. According to Shopify Support, this persistence is by design to avoid race conditions in the tagging system.
Workarounds suggested:
- Create a customer segment filtered by the unwanted tag, then bulk-edit to remove that tag from those customers.
- Export customers, delete tags in the CSV, then re-import.
Limitations: These steps clean up records but don’t purge the tag value from suggestions.
Latest update: There is no self-serve feature to fully delete tag values from the suggestion index. However, Support can manually remove specific unnecessary tag values upon request.
Status: No built-in resolution yet; actionable cleanup steps plus a Support escalation path. A screenshot was shared for context.

create a segment to sort based on unnecessary tags then edit it in bulk. then show the column of the tag so now remove unnecessary tag.
OR
export the customer and edit the customer file to delete tags then re-upload it.

Welcome to Shopify Community.
According to Shopify Support, although customer tags can be deleted from customer product (removing tags from individual products), even when they are all removed, they will not be deleted fully. This is specifically to avoid any race conditions from the tagging table.
So, only option now is to remove the tags from products.

This feature is not available yet. But you can contact the Shopify support team they will remove the unnecessary tag manually from their side. lets hope that they provide this feature ASAP.
