Is Shopify only for ecommerce Or can it be used for a service business? I’m a plumber and need to set up a simple website for my business.
Hello @LindaMc
It is possible to sell service on Shopify?
The answer is Yes definitely.
Shopify helps people bring their offline business online. Hence it does not matter if you are selling physical products, virtual products, or services on Shopify.
I have been working with Shopify for the last 5 years and I have seen plantly of stores. Many stores sell online course, tutorial sessions, and certifications, and nowadays you can also sell NFTs.
In fact, word e-commerce is big. If you google it you will find this definition.
Ecommerce (electronic commerce) refers to all online activity that involves the buying and selling of products and services
If you are new and you want to start you can refer this article : https://www.shopify.in/start
Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything.
Thanks ![]()

Hi @LindaMc ,
That is an excellent question!
You don’t need to be actively selling products to use Shopify. Many Shopify users like yourself don’t use the platform to sell products. As long as you are operating in line with our Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy, you can use Shopify as you like.
How are you currently processing payments? With Shopify, you can also process payments in person using our Shopify POS app on your mobile device or iPad. In addition, if you are based in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Ireland, you can use a Shopify card reader to accept credit card payments anywhere in the world.
Even if you’re not in one of these countries, you can still take advantage of the Shopify POS, accepting cash payments and manually entering customers’ credit card details through the app. In addition, if you have a card reader you are already using, you can also select an “external terminal payment” option within the app when processing the order, which tells Shopify that you had accepted payment through a device not synced with the POS app.
Remember that the services you offer are products, just not in the traditional, tangible sense. Instead of selling physical items, you are selling your services to people who need them.
If the prices vary based on the job, you can always use apps like Request a Quote + Hide Price for service quotes. Instead of having the usual “add to cart” option, your potential customers can select “quote request”.
There are many stories from merchants selling services on Shopify. Feel free to check them on this link.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
