Make Custom variant option a charging option

Topic summary

A merchant wants to charge customers extra when they select a custom name option on their product page.

Suggested Solutions:

  • Manual variant setup: Create two product variants—one without customization and one with—pricing the customized variant higher to reflect the added charge.

  • Third-party apps: Several apps were recommended:

    • Product Options & Customizer (by Product Customizer)
    • Kickflip - includes a demo showing a soccer uniform with a $35 upcharge for custom player names, plus video tutorials
    • Easify Product Options - allows adding a checkbox for the custom name option with automatic pricing and a text field for input
  • Custom development: Implement the feature using metafields and custom scripting to detect the custom name variant and display an input box.

Current Status:

The merchant’s store is password-protected, preventing others from viewing the specific product setup. Community members are awaiting more details about the product configuration to provide tailored guidance.

Hi, @samphainnov . I’m happy to look into this with you!

Your store is password protected right now so I’m not able to see the example you shared. Can you tell me more about the product(s) that need this custom name option and how it’s set up on your store?

The options to do what you described would depend on how your products are set up and how many custom add-on options you need for your products. For example, if there’s only one simple add-on you may be able to do this by setting up your products with two variants, one variant being the product without customizations and the second variant being the product with customizations. Then, you could make the variant with customizations more expensive so customers are charged more for the customization. If your products have more customization options, or a more complicated customization option, you may want to consider using a third party app like Product Options & Customizer (built by Product Customizer). An app like this would allow you to set up your products with up-charge/add-on pricing.

Please let me know if you have any questions! If you tell me more about your products I may be able to suggest some other options as well.

Hi @samphainnov

That’s something you can easily do with Kickflip. Here’s a demo product of a soccer uniform with a $35 extra charge if the customer ads a custom player name.

You can try Kickflip for free here and here’s a youtube video explaining how to add text on custom a product.

Hope this helps!

Hi @samphainnov ,

This can be achieve via custom dev in theme by hiring someone like us.

On the Shopify Product Admin page (where you created your product option), you can give that variant (created by adding your new "option) a different price than the main variant.

You shouldn’t need any special implementation or developer to build something for this feature, since Shopify supports it out of the box.
Let me know if that works! @samphainnov

Hi @samphainnov ,

I recommend utilizing the Easify Product Options app to seamlessly integrate a checkbox for your custom-naming option. With this app, you can easily set an additional price for this personalized feature. Once customers select the checkbox, they will be automatically charged. Additionally, the app allows you to display a text field, enabling users to input their desired custom name  .

To assist you further, here’s a quick demo tailored to your setup:

Simply create a variant in metafield for a custom name, you can set your price and write a script that will detect the custom name variant sections and display the input box to take the name.
