My First Steps

As someone who recognizes the importance of ads and marketing to business success, but has zero experience in that field, what do you recommend as tangible first steps for paid marketing for my products? For example, how can I run low-cost experiments to better understand which services are worth it, and which messaging approaches are most effective?

Bonus: if you have any recommended reading for wrapping a novice brain around marketing campaigns, I’d love to hear it!

Hello Will, thank you for your question in the FeedArmy AMA Event.

So to keep costs down, I would start with standard shopping ads only and not use performance max.

The reason is that Performance max can bloat your costs, while Pmax is great for brand awareness as well, if cost cutting is key, then use standard shopping campaigns, so that you can see what search terms are triggered.

You can even go and setup advanced standard shopping campaigns explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiRIDzRrHno

As to what to read, first I would go to linkedin and start connecting with other experts.

Check lots of articles and videos about strategies, however avoid hypevideos. Such as here is how I made xx million, they are usually misleading.

Thank you, @EmmanuelFlossie ! That is quite helpful. I will look into Standard shopping ads, and stay away from hypevideos! Haha.

To set my own expectations, how much would you recommend spending in monthly marketing to take a business like this from zero-to-profitable? Vs. How much to maintain or grow after that?

For context: my business is selling pins/stickers/prints of my own designs - it’s not my chief source of income, but is something I’d like to grow and am willing to invest in. My goal is to scope marketing investment so I am making that money back… and looking to set my expectation for dollars and calendar time.

Thank you for the reply Will, I would at least start with a $30 daily budget so for a month $910. If you setup advanced standard shopping strategies, you can control your budget much better then with performance max.

Then increase your budget as you see sales and profits roll in.

For pins, stickers and prints, if they are your own designs, then the standard advanced strategy is best, because you want to avoid overtargeting, as your budget will quickly run out with PMax.
