Native support for multiple variant images

It doesn’t seem like Horizons supports this yet (still!) but it sure would be great if the reference theme supported multiple variant images on the product page. In the context of this AMA, I guess my question is more like, “why does this seemingly fundamental functionality continue to elude us when it comes to Shopify’s reference theme?”, and more importantly, “is this something that we might expect in a future release?”. It kinda feels like maybe the front-end team is waiting for the back-end team to “solve” this first on the product admin side (since there you can still only assign one image to a variant), but I can still think of a few ways (including the customizations we’ve made) to support this. I just wish we didn’t have to build it (or install an app) to have that capability - mostly because this is such a fundamental need for anyone browsing a site that has multiple images for a variant (which is pretty much everyone).

There’s a lot of no-brainer functions missing in Horizon. Thankfully you can use the native Ai for some of it.

Hey @AlphaBen

Yes! Multiple images per variant are coming soon.

As you point out, there are ways to set things up so that this is doable today, but these solutions usually require that merchants organize their images, their products or their theme (or several of those) in specific ways.

Stay tuned :+1:

Hi Arthur_D,

Thanks for the update! That’s great news. Do you have an ETA available for when the multiple images per variant feature will be rolled out?

I’m currently using the theme and I love it, but without this feature, I’ll have to consider moving to a different platform or theme as our shop is expanding and we need more robust image management capabilities to properly showcase our products.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Hey @Mikeoo

I’m not working on this myself so I don’t have a good sense of the timeline.
Whenever it launches it will be a platform-level change rather than code changes in the theme so you’ll be able to benefit from it on any theme.
In the mean time I know there are apps that do this well; depending on your budget and requirements I’ll let you decide whether a new theme or an app makes more sense.

Best of luck

Hi @AlphaBen It is exciting to hear the native support is coming soon to Horizon theme. As Arthur mentioned the current solution to this problem is to use apps. I built Rubik Variant Images app which solves this problem and it works great with Horizon theme. I also recorded a video and explained how the app works.
