Page speed optimization - Help please

Topic summary

A store owner is experiencing sudden, significant slowdowns after making recent changes. The primary suspects are:

Likely causes:

  • Large, unoptimized image banners added to new collections
  • Multiple new collection and product templates increasing site complexity
  • Two recently installed apps adding extra code

Recommended immediate fixes:

  • Optimize and compress all images to web-appropriate sizes/formats
  • Review new template code for performance bottlenecks
  • Remove unnecessary apps to reduce overhead

Advanced optimization techniques suggested:

  • Implement caching mechanisms
  • Minify CSS and JavaScript files
  • Enable lazy loading for images and non-essential content
  • Use a CDN for faster global content delivery
  • Minimize redirects and ensure mobile optimization
  • Monitor performance regularly using Google PageSpeed Insights or Shopify’s built-in tools

The discussion remains open with no resolution yet. One respondent also noted that slow sites have larger carbon footprints and suggested using performance analysis tools to identify specific issues.

hi, so as of pretty recently my store is loading sickingly slow and I am not sure what its caused by as not much has changed in terms of content. I made new collections with large image banners and also quite a few collection and product templates. I did also add two more apps but i think it still loaded fast when that happened. I have updated all apps now too.

Anybody any idea why all of a sudden its so slow?

Thanks

Hey @ManuelH your store’s recent slowdown could be due to a many factors

  1. Large Images: Adding collections with big image banners can make your site slower especially if those images aren’t optimized for the web

  2. New Templates: Introducing new collection and product templates might have made your site more complex which can slow down loading times

  3. Additional Apps: Even though you only added two more apps each one can add extra code that affects how fast your site loads

    To fix the issue:

    1. Optimize Images: Make sure all your images are the right size and format for the web

    2. Review Templates: Check the code for your new templates to see if anything is causing a slowdown

    3. App Cleanup: Consider removing any apps you don’t really need as each one adds extra stuff to your site that can slow it down

And if you have some technical skills you can also:

    1. Cache Optimization: Utilize caching mechanisms provided by Shopify or third-party apps to store frequently accessed data temporarily reducing the need to fetch data from the server each time

    2. Minify CSS and JavaScript: Minifying your CSS and JavaScript files removes unnecessary characters like spaces and comments to reduce file sizes and speeding up loading times.

    3. Lazy Loading: Implement lazy loading for images and other non-essential content this means loading content only when it’s needed such as when it comes into view as the user scrolls down the page

    4. Content Delivery Network (CDN): Consider using a CDN to deliver your content from servers located closer to your visitors, to reduce latency and speeding up loading times especially for international visitors

    5. Reduce Redirects: Minimize the number of redirects on your site, as each redirect adds extra time to the loading process.

    6. Mobile Optimization: Make sure that your store is optimized for mobile devices as mobile users may experience slower loading times if the site isn’t optimized for their devices

    7. Monitor Performance: Regularly monitor your site’s performance using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or Shopify’s built-in performance reports. This can help you identify specific areas that need improvement.

      hope that helps

Slow speeds usually originate from large image banners, additional templates, or concealed app scripts little alterations can add up.
I invite you to try out your shop on thecarbonfootprint.ai it illustrates how your site’s performance impacts speed and carbon footprint. Slow websites also have a larger carbon footprint, by the way. Making a few tweaks will help your speed and shrink your footprint!
