I’m not sure if Shopify has made some recent updates, but after I change my store code and refresh the corresponding page, I find that the old page still displays. Only when I open the backend and click Preview do I see the latest content. The key problem is that when I’m fixing performance issues in my store, PageSpeed can’t test my changes in real time. Sometimes it takes two hours to test the latest page content, which seriously affects my work efficiency. I can’t find any update logs about this on Shopify, but it’s worth noting that I’ve only encountered this problem recently and haven’t encountered it in the past year. Topic summary
A Shopify store developer is experiencing a persistent caching issue where code changes made in the theme editor don’t immediately appear on the live storefront. The problem affects multiple stores and colleagues, suggesting it’s not isolated.
Key symptoms:
- After editing theme code, the storefront continues displaying old content
- Changes only visible when using the admin’s Preview function
- Issue persists across different browsers, incognito mode, and after clearing cache
- Hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R) doesn’t resolve it
- Significantly impacts PageSpeed testing workflow, with delays up to 2 hours
Troubleshooting attempted:
- Browser cache clearing
- URL parameters
- Multiple browsers
- Incognito windows
- Hard refresh commands
- Changing store default location
Current status:
The issue remains unresolved. One community member cannot replicate the problem, suggesting it may be environment-specific or affecting only certain stores. The developer provided detailed reproduction steps with screenshots and video documentation but cannot grant collaborator access due to client confidentiality. No clear solution has emerged from the discussion.
Hi @Mr_L
Ok dear, please share your store URL and collaborator code with me so I can check and provide you with the proper solution.
I’m afraid I can’t provide collaborator access since these stores belong to my clients. However, based on my testing, this issue doesn’t appear to be limited to a single store—you should be able to reproduce it on any Shopify store. The steps are as follows:
-
In Google Chrome, go to the store admin, edit the theme code, and make a small change (for example, update a class name or add
nofollowto an<a>tag). -
Open the storefront in another browser (such as Firefox), and inspect the page source or DOM in the developer console. In most cases, the change will not appear there.
-
Return to Chrome, open the Shopify admin theme editor, and click Preview. In the preview, you will see the updated code.
The strange part is that, even if you refresh the storefront page in Firefox multiple times, it continues to show the old version of the code. Clearing browser cache or using an incognito window does not resolve the issue.
Hello, is there any specific solution?
Hi @Mr_L
Dear, I will need to check the theme once.
I cannot replicate your issue. Edits to code appear on site immediately, using different browsers, incognito, and mobile.
That’s really strange. At present, I’m not the only one who has encountered this kind of problem, but my colleagues have also encountered this kind of problem. Unfortunately, the video cannot be uploaded here, otherwise I can demonstrate it.
Sorry, I don’t have this permission, but I’m sure this is not a problem with the theme code ![]()
Hmm I know you tried clearing the cache but that’s the only thing I can think of that would cause that. You could try doing a Hard Refresh on the browsers. Cntrl Shift R or Cmd Shift R. It bypasses the cache.
I have tested it several times here, and you can see from the video that the old code is always displayed, and it will not take effect if I clear the cache.

Sounds very similar to something I encountered. Turned out to be necessary to choose store default as United States to see the changes applied.
It doesn’t seem to have any effect after I do this, but thank you for your suggestion.
