Rewarding customers after they have spent $x with our store

Hi there,

We’d like to implement a very simple ‘surprise and delight’ feature. The idea is basically that after a customer has spent $x with our store, we add a free gift with their most recent order. So to the customer it looks quite random, but on the backend, there is a spend criteria they have to meet.

Anyone have any tips on implementing this, and is there a way that shopify can notify us when a customer meets this $x criteria so that we can add something to their order?

Unfortunately the discount code option doesn’t really let me do what I’m after. Basically, what I want to do is offer a gift to a customer once they have spent say $1000 with us in total… this could be over multiple purchases, for example. So it needs to look at a customer’s total spend with us over time.

Any tips as to how I could do this?
