Theme updates delete all custom codes

Topic summary

A user is experiencing a recurring issue where theme updates delete custom code that was added to resolve conflicts between their Shopify theme and a filter app. The app developers had inserted extensive custom code to fix website structure problems caused by the app.

Current Problem:

  • Every theme update removes all custom code modifications
  • Manual reinsertion of code snippets is required after each update
  • User seeks either a future Shopify feature to preserve custom code or alternative solutions

Suggested Workaround:

  • Create a backup before updating the theme
  • If custom code is critical: contact Shopify to revert to the previous theme version, extract and backup the custom code, then update again and re-add the missing code
  • This approach ensures all store elements function properly after updates

Status: The discussion remains open with the user considering the backup/revert strategy but no permanent solution identified.

Hello,

I am using a theme and a filter app, but unfortunately they conflict and the app changes the whole website structure. So the app developers added a lot of custom code to make the website look as It should.

Here is the problem: Whenever I update my theme, the custom code gets deleted and I was told that Shopify has no option yet to keep the custom codes. So everytime I have to manually search all the code bits and insert them in the right sections.

This situation is really frustrating, so I was wondering if this is something that Shopify will implement in the future, or do you guys know another less tedious solution?

Kind regards

Marc

Are you on WhatsApp so we can talk better there

Hi @marcdanielklotz

Please note here at first that after updating the theme version, the previous changes or works on the last theme will not exist anymore. Therefore it is suggested to make a backup before updating the theme. But if you need the custom code very much in the newly updated theme, you can also consider contacting Shopify and reverting your theme back to last version, then find out the related custom code to make a backup and update again by adding the missing custom code. In this way, you shall make all elements on the store work properly.

You can have a try via this way and see if works on your store or not. Thank you!
