This issue is affecting THOUSANDS of shopify stores

There is a new seo error on google pagespeed insights affecting God knows how many Shopify stores - if it’s affecting kyliecosmetics.com , it’s probably affecting yours.

The critical errors are in hreflang (error) and rel-caconical (error) , and also :

Preconnect to required origins - Error!

I’ve checked dozens of shopify stores on pagespeed insights- all showing the same error since last Thursday (2 days ago).

And I was chatting to technical support and they denied any server side update . So either google’s pagespeed insight is faulty, they released a new update, or Shopify released a new server side update causing the errors.

They need to look into this urgently. Our organic traffic has plummeted.

have you found an fix for this? It is affecting every Shopify store and not affecting any non Shopify platform such as magneto or other platforms

No fix. Shopify support have repeatedly told me to contact my theme developer, even tho it’s a shopify issue , they won’t provide any solution or even the cause of the problem.

I’m having the same issue at simpledesertdesigns.com as well. I saw the same drop overnight essentially. Have you gotten any new information since you posted last?

I just found this article which seems like it might explain a bit… https://www.digitaldarts.com.au/hreflang-tags-shopify

The fact that it changed overnight suggests something happened to cause this change to our sites.

I just spoke with Shopify support, and they told me it is an issue with Lighthouse, currently being resolved by them over there, and mentioned this thread for more info -

https://github.com/GoogleChrome/lighthouse/issues/14934

So I guess it is just a matter of waiting it out, but at least a concrete answer.

No update. Something happened overnight as you say that caused this fault. Could it be a redirection issue? Possibly. And Google are now punishing for that. I have Markets and shopify automatically direct customers to the correct subfolder. This is great becuase it avoids popups. Why use a popup if a customer can automatically land on the correct site? Thats great UX to me. Shopify also said before in one of their support documents that the redirection occurs in a way that you don’t get punished by Google.

I might try installing a geolocation popup just to see if it corrects this issue. I suspect it might actually fix it as the popup basically blocks thw automatic redirection.

I’ve got the Geolocation popup on several of the sites I work on, and this issue still affects them, so no need to add it specifically for resolving this. It does sound like it is a Lighthouse glitch that is only affecting Shopify, so just a matter of waiting for it to get fixed their end unfortunately!

Thanks for this info Leanna! Didn’t want to mess around with more apps… our store is a delicate ecosystem prone to screwing up at the slightest interference!
