Does anyone know if I’m doing something wrong but I cant seem to find out why this is happening as it is all over the board and doesn’t apply to any particular vendor.
any help would be HUGELY appreciated. Im sure its something stupid.

If possible, could you please share the link of your store for further investigation? But I presume that this problem happens because the thumbnail files might be too large? For media elements to show up seamlessly on your store, it is recommended that you should lower the file size as much as possible. So you might want to try that.
You can go to online image optimization tool and put all your thumbnails on the site to optimize its size. I would recommend this tool: https://tinypng.com/ .

The search was for platemates but happens with others as well.
